Lady Vols building toward SEC play with another tough opponent

| 6 Comments | No TrackBacks

The schedule only gets tougher for the Lady Vols from here on out. Of course, when have the Lady Vols ever been worried about tough schedules?

No. 3 Tennessee (9-0) faces perhaps its biggest test of the season when it faces second-ranked Stanford (8-0) on Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. (TV: FSN, 2:30 p.m. ET). But the preconference schedule hasn't exactly been filled with cupcakes, either.

UT opened with then-No.8 Baylor. In this week's AP poll, the Bears are up to No. 6 and haven't lost since they visited Thompson-Boling Arena back on Nov. 15. Tennessee also dispatched No. 19 Texas at home and went on the road to defeat No. 19 Virginia.

And after Saturday's game against Stanford, the Lady Vols will face No. 15 Oklahoma on Jan. 3 in Knoxville, too before jumping into SEC play.

Forward Glory Johnson likes playing a tough non-conference schedule, almost as much as she likes the way her teammates have been performing this season.

"Last year going into it as freshmen we were really confident just because of the program and what we knew the program could do and the coaches and all the confidence we had within the Tennessee program," she said. "Now, I think we have more confidence in ourselves. We showed what we could do. Last year was kind of rough, but this year we've been there before. We know what we have to do to win games."

Gloria, stop playing so fast, you are 6'3",yopu don't have to do that...........

GO PAT SUMMITT-YOU ARE NUMBER1-I HAVE FOLLOWED YOU AND YOUR TEAMS FOR MANY YEARS-YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!

Go Lady Vols! Right Glory Johnson slow down alittle, don't be so fast. GO BEAT STANFORD!
Pat is the BEST

Lady Vols all the way Go Coach!!!

Glory doesn't need to slow down she reminds me so much of Maya Moore if she would only get the fundamentals of the game down she'll be unstoppable. Kelley Cain needs to play bg against Appel and I think she's going to do it I really don't think we know what she's capable of doing yet but I think today might be the day she completely shows up. Angie just needs to show up in the first half like she does in the second and play hard defense. Taber just should play hard defense and not let the crowd rattle her. Shekinna just needs to do what she always does. When Alyssia gets in she must play big. Alicia must play hard on defense as usual and look to score more that she does. Briana needs to play bigger than she has been she has the skill set but idk maybe she gets to hard on herself. Smallbone just needs to be comfortable in her ailities and play to her strengths she's a good player maybe not as athletic as the rest but she has a great shot she just needs to show what she can do in this game. This lady vol team has the components it needs to win the national championship and I would for them to do so.

I just watched UConn "play" Stanford. Actually, Gino's team reminds me a lot (athletically) of this year's Lady Vols. And, as weird as womens' bball can get, I think we would match up better with the Huskies than did Stanford. There are a couple of glaring differences, however, and I think both will show during contests in the remainder of this season. Youth, that is, lack of wisdom that experience brings...think of the last two Lady Vol championship teams:senior laden. With youth comes the other factor. Connecticut doesn't panic; they remain calm because they know what they are capable of doing. They don't get all wound up and crazy like our young players do from time to time. We will learn to play to our team and individual strengths. Coach will see to that. Don't despair though. Remember how frustrating last year was with all freshman(except one), and how much improved we are in a relatively short period of time. Go Lady Vols.
