Former Vols John-Patrick Smith and Ben Rogers won their opening match Monday at the USTA Futures of Laguna Niguel (Calif.), beating former Sacramento State standout Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Boris Nicola Bakalov 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Smith and Rogers, seeded third, have a day off in doubles before returning Thursday to play Chris Kearney and Sahr Timothy Kpulun. The Vols duo is the highest-seeded team remaining in the tournaments field.
Another former Vol, Adam Hubble, lost his opening doubles match Monday with partner Daniel Cox of Great Britain. They fell in a third-set super tiebreaker to former Virginia players Sanam Singh and Lee Singer 6-4, 1-6, [12-10].
Smith starts singles play Wednesday against qualifier Rafael Davidian of Germany.
