Former Vol John-Patrick Smith recorded an upset Thursday in the second round of the USTA Futures of Laguna Niguel in California.
Smith beat third-seeded Chris Eaton 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Eaton of Great Britain is ranked No. 351, the highest-ranked opponent Smith has defeated this year.

In doubles, Smith and Ben Rogers also advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Chris Kearney and Sahr Timothy Kpulun. They face former Virginia players Sanam Singh and Lee Singer.
