Tennys Sandgren started singles play at the National Bank Futures in Markham, Canada, earning a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Medy Chettar of France.
Sandgren and Rhyne Williams also rolled to the doubles semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win against fourth-seeded Devin Britton and Jordan Cox. The former Vols' duo are coming off a tournament title last week in Toronto.
In California: John-Patrick Smith won his opening-round match at the Costa Mesa Tennis Classic in California, beating Nikala Scholtz of South Africa 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Smith plays Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk in Thursday's second round. He and Ben Rogers will also resume doubles play, facing former Vol Adam Hubble and Adam Cox.
