In doubles, Williams and Tennys Sandgren picked up where they left off after winning the Tevlin Family Futures last week in Toronto. They beat former Arkansas Razorback standout Blake Strode and Michael McClune 7-5, 7-6 (3).
In California: John-Patrick Smith and Ben Rogers kicked off the Costa Mesa Tennis Classic with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Trent Aaron and Brian Battistone on Tuesday afternoon in Costa Mesa, Calif.
They face a familiar opponent in the second round: former Vol Adam Hubble, who is playing this week with Daniel Cox of Great Britain. They beat former college All-Americans Alexandre Lacroix of Florida and Sanam Singh of Virginia 7-6 (4), 6-4.
