Smith Set for Australian Open Playoffs

Former Vol John-Patrick Smith starts his quest for a main draw wild card in the Australian Open tonight when he plays his first-round match of the Australian Open Playoffs on Tuesday morning at Melbourne Park.

Smith faces fellow Queenslander Maverick Banes to start the 24-player tournament. The winner of the match faces third-seeded and world No. 254 Chris Guccione in the round of 16.

Because of the 16-hour time difference, the match actually begins Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern for any fans wanting to follow along. Free live video streaming with commentary will be available here. .

Smith, currently ranked No. 441, last played the Australian Open Playoffs in 2009 after completing the best fall season of his collegiate career as a junior. With the singles and doubles trophies from ITA All-American in tow, Smith returned to Australia just a few days prior to the wild card tournament where he went 1-2 in round robin play. He did not play in 2010 because of his exam schedule.
