Former Vol John-Patrick Smith starts his quest for a main draw wild card in the Australian Open tonight when he plays his first-round match of the Australian Open Playoffs on Tuesday morning at Melbourne Park.
Smith faces fellow Queenslander Maverick Banes to start the 24-player tournament. The winner of the match faces third-seeded and world No. 254 Chris Guccione in the round of 16.
Because of the 16-hour time difference, the match actually begins Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern for any fans wanting to follow along. Free live video streaming with commentary will be available here.
Smith, currently ranked No. 441, last played the Australian Open Playoffs in 2009 after completing the best fall season of his collegiate career as a junior. With the singles and doubles trophies from ITA All-American in tow, Smith returned to Australia just a few days prior to the wild card tournament where he went 1-2 in round robin play. He did not play in 2010 because of his exam schedule.
