Former Vols Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren won their opening singles matches Wednesday against a pair of current Ole Miss Rebels to advance to the second round of the Brownsville (Texas) Futures.
Williams beat the Rebels' No. 2 player and 2011 NCAA quarterfinalist Marcel Thiemann 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Sandgren also required a three-setter -- and a late comeback -- to advance in the draw. Down 4-1 in the third set, the former Vol won the last five games to defeat redshirt freshman Nik Scholtz 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Sandgren and Williams also teamed up for doubles and breezed through a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Harrison Adams and Nicholas Naumann.
The Vol duo has the day off in singles, but they will be playing doubles, facing Antoine Benneteau and Gregory Ouellette.
