Former Vols Tennys Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith won to start tournaments Wednesday in California and Canada respectively.
Fresh off his title run last week at the Calabasas Futures, Sandgren defeated Vladimir Obradovic of Serbia 7-6 (5), 6-2 to move into the second round of the Costa Mesa Futures, also a $15,000 event. On Thursday, he faces American qualifier Chris Wettengel, who upset second-seeded Carsten Ball of Australia 7-5, 6-2.
Last time Sandgren won one singles title, he ended up winning in back-to-back weeks, taking the singles titles in Godfrey and Decatur, Ill.
In Canada, Smith is on the hunt for his fourth doubles title of 2012 at the Rimouski Challenger, a $35,000 plus hospitality event. He and fellow Australian Collin Ebelthite defeated Americans Maciek Sykut and Denis Zivkovic 6-1, 6-1 to advance to today's quarterfinals.
Because Smith was in the semifinals of last week's tournament, he was unable to travel to Rimouski in time for singles qualifying.
