It took them both three sets, but John-Patrick Smith and Tennys Sandgren both advanced to the semifinals of their respective $15,000 Futures tournaments Friday.
Smith avenged a third-set tiebreak loss to Vincent Millot a week ago in appropriate fashion, defeating second-seeded Frenchman 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals of the Sherbrooke Futures in Quebec.
Smith plays third-seeded Stefan Seifert of Germany in the semifinals today. Seifert won the Canadian tournament last week in Gatineau while Smith is aiming to reach his fourth professional final.
In the Calabasas Futures in California, Sandgren rallied after losing a first-set tiebreaker to beat Zimbabwe's Takayani Garanganga 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-4 to move on to his first ITF Futures semifinal since September in Canada.
Sandgren faces top-seeded Andre Begemann of Germany in the semifinals. Begemann entered the tournament ranked No. 266, and Sandren is still looking for his first top-300 win.
With eight ATP points already accumulated in the tournament, Sandgren will be close to cracking the top 500 for the first time in his career. Both Smith and Rhyne Williams will break into the top 400 when their pending points are added, Williams next week and Smith the week after.
