Former Vol John-Patrick Smith continued his fast start on his three-week Canadian tour Friday, advancing another round in the Gatineau Futures, a $15,000 level event.
Smith knocked off fourth-seeded Fritz Wolmarans of Germany 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. He now faces top-seeded Vincent Millot of France, who is ranked No. 253 in the world. Smith entered the week No. 412.
In doubles, Smith and 2009 NCAA singles champion Devin Britton will play for the doubles trophy. They rallied from two breaks down in the first set to beat Richard Becker and Stefan Seifert 7-6 (2), 6-2. The collegiate pair face second-seeded Andrei Daescu, a homer Oklahoma Sooner, and Florin Morgea.
Smith is off to a fast start in doubles this year with an 11-1 record and a pair of $50,000 Challenger titles. His only loss was in the Australian Open to eventual champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.
