Former Vol John-Patrick Smith captured his third doubles title of the year, winning in three sets with former Ole Miss Rebel Devin Britton on Saturday at the Gatineau Futures.
Smith and Britton rallied after dropping the first set to beat second-seeded Andrei Daescu and Florin Mergea 5-7, 6-3, [10-5] in the title match in Quebec.
With the Futures title, Smith is off to a 12-1 start in doubles to 2012 and has already bagged three trophies. He won back-to-back $50,000 Challenger tournaments with John Peers. The former SEC Athlete of the Year is now up to No. 279 in the world doubles rankings, and his win this week should propel him near the top 250.
Smith did lose one three-setter on Saturday. He fell to top-seeded Vincent Millot 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals. He should enter the top 400 in singles.
Smith and Britton will team up again next week for the Sherbrooke Futures, another $15,000 event.
