Tennys Sandgren won a pair of matches in California while John-Patrick Smith won his match to start the second leg of his Canadian circuit Tuesday.
Sandgren breezed past fourth-seeded Gregory Ouellette 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round of the Calabasas Futures, a $15,000 event. He will face either Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic or Vladimir Obradovic of Serbia in the next round Thursday.
In doubles, Sandgren and Di Wu defeated Daniel Kosakowski and Dennis Novikov 5-7, 6-4, [10-7].
Smith, who is not playing doubles this week, advanced in the first round of the $15,000 Sherbrooke Futures in Canada, beating wild card George Jecminek 6-1 in the third set. He faces Jaan-Frederik Brunken of Germany in the round of 16.
