Former Vol John Patrick Smith was selected by the Orange County Breakers in the second round of the World TeamTennis roster draft Tuesday.
Smith was the first rookie men's player taken in the four-round draft, the three men's players taken before him being longtime WorldTeam Tennis veterans.
World TeamTennis is an eight-team tennis league in the United States that pits professional tennis players in co-ed team competition. The season only lasts the month of July when many professional players are stateside playing in the US Open summer series. WTT features some of the best players in the world both past and present. John McEnroe, Serena and Venus Williams, Mike and Bob Bryan, Mardy Fish and John Isner are among the marquee players this year.
This season's Breakers team includes Lindsay Davenport (franchise player), Anna-lena Groenefeld (1st round), Smith (2nd round) and Travis Parrott (3rd round). The team was 4-10 last season, finishing sixth in the league.
The Breakers season begins July 9 at home against the Washington Kastles.
