ON TOUR: Smith, Peers Win 3rd Challenger Title of 2012

Former Vol John-Patrick Smith and Baylor standout John Peers captured their third ATP Challenger doubles title of the year Saturday evening in Leon, Mexico.

Smith and Peers defeated the Mexican wild card pair of Cesar Ramirez and Bruno Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3 in the title match of the $35,000 Leon Challenger. The collegiate pair did not drop a set and upset second and third seeds during the week on their way to a check for $2,200 and 80 tour points.

Currently ranked No. 225 in the world in doubles, Smith will crack the ATP top 200 when new rankings are released Monday. He reached the quarterfinals in singles as well, good for 15 tour points.

Smith continues his current three-week circuit next week in Little Rock, Ark., for a $15,000 Futures event. He will be joined by fellow Vols Tennys Sandgren and Ben Rogers.

Just a few weeks removed from his third career pro title at the Calabasas Futures in California, Sandgren picked up where we left off last week at the Oklahoma City (Okla.) Futures. He reached the semifinals.
