Four-time Tennessee All-American John-Patrick Smith and former Baylor standout John Peers had not played a match together since early February, but picked up right where they left off Monday at the $50,000 Tallahassee Challenger in Florida.
Smith and Peers, who won back-to-back Challengers in Australia earlier this year, won their opening match in Tallahassee. The collegiate Aussie pair beat lucky losers Adham El-Effendi and Darren Walsh 6-3, 6-4.
Smith has won 14 consecutive doubles matches this season and has quickly risen to No. 235 in the world. Peers is also climbing up the doubles ladder, ranked No. 190.
In singles, Tennys Sandgren lost his opening round in unusual fashion to Jamie Baker of Great Britain 0-6, 6-0, 6-4. Sandgren has a wild card in doubles with Brian Baker.
