ON TOUR: Williams Captures Third ITF Futures Title

Former Vol Rhyne Williams won his third career pro singles title with a three-set victory to wrap up the II Torneo Internacional Futures, a $10,000 event in Madrid, Spain.

After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Williams rolled to a 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory over third-seeded Sergio Gutierrez-Ferroll to win the title on the Spanish red clay. The first set Williams lost was the only one he dropped all week.

Williams has now won three career ITF Futures singles titles at the $10,000 level. All of them have come on clay -- including the breakout Pittsburgh Futures title he won at age 16 -- though this was his first tournament win on the traditional European red clay instead of the American green.

The Madrid title ends Williams' solid four-week stay in Europe, which started with a quarterfinal appearance at the Garden Open in Rome, a $50,000 Challenger event. He has spent the last three weeks in Spain for a trio of $10,000-level Futures.

In Nottingham: John-Patrick Smith is back in action this week to kick off the brief grass court season in England. He is playing back-to-back $75,000 Challengers at Nottingham, winning his first qualifying match Sunday against Richard Bloomfield 7-5, 7-6 (4). He plays former world No. 45 Mischa Zverev on Monday.
