ON TOUR: Smith, Sandgren Make Quarters at Winnetka

Former Vols John-Patrick Smith and Tennys Sandgren picked up straight-set victories to advance to the quarterfinals of the $50,000 Winnetka (Ill.) Challenger on Wednesday.

Smith took care of his service games with 10 aces to oust third-seeded Bobby Reynolds of the United States 6-3, 6-4. Sandgren beat qualifier Ante Pavic 6-4, 6-3 to reach his first career quarterfinal at the Challenger level.

Rhyne Williams lost his second-round match to Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-1, 6-4.

Smith will play Ledovskikh on Thursday for a chance to reach his first Challenger semifinal. Sandgren faces sixth-seeded Sergei Bubka of Ukraine, son of the famous pole vaulter of the same name.

In two days, the Vols have been responsible from eliminating three of the eight seeded players in the draw.

In doubles, Smith and partner John Peers got a walkover into the quarterfinals and moved on in their bid for a fourth Challenger title this year. Williams and Sandgren earned a fast 6-2, 6-2 win over James Duckworth and Greg Jones.
