The singles draw for the ITA National Collegiate Summer Championships was released on Friday with three Vols vying for a title and a chance to earn a wild card into the fall's ITA All-American Championships.
Sophomore Hunter Reese is the top-seeded player in the draw. Reese played primarily No. 2 doubles as a redshirt freshman and was No. 70 in the final college rankings, earning second-team All-SEC honors.
Reese has a bye in the first round but could play two rounds on Saturday.
Also in the draw are UT seniors Taylor Patrick and John Collins. Patrick was the Vols' usual starter on court 6 last season, his first year as a starter while Collins played last year at Maryland. Patrick plays Xavier's Michael Moe in the first round, and Collins received a bye to the second round, where he will play Georgia Tech's Vikram Hundal.
The winner of the tournament receives a main draw wild card into the All-American, college tennis' major outdoor fall tournament. The finalist receives a wild card into qualifying. The same prizes are at stake in the doubles draw, which has not been released yet.
Former Vol Matt Brewer was a finalist in the ITA Summer Championships in 2009. Chris Racz is Tennessee's most recent winner of the national tournament, taking the trophy in 2007.
Libietis Loses in Finals: Sophomore Mikelis Libietis and partner Oskars Vaskis couldn't quite close the deal on the doubles title Friday at the Futures stop this week in Latvia.
Libietis and Vaskis won the first set handedly but lost 0-6, 7-6 (5), [10-5] to second-seeded Giammarco Micolani and Giorgio Portaluri.
This week was Libietis' final tournament of the summer before returning for the fall semester. He has had a successful run in tournaments lately, reaching the singles quarterfinals of a Futures in Lithuania last week. Libietis played at the top of both lineups for the Vols last season.
