The Vols tennis team is making good on its No. 1 seeds in singles and doubles this week at the ITA National Collegiate Summer Circuit Championships in Bloomington, Ill.
Sophomore Hunter Reese has advanced to the singles quarterfinals as the top seed while he and senior transfer John Collins have reached the doubles semifinals.
In singles, Reese bounced back from a slow start Sunday to beat Texas A&M's Jordan Szabo 3-6, 6-2, [10-2]. He faces Illinois' Farris Gosea in singles in the quarterfinals Monday.
Reese and Collins, playing a tournament together for the first time, started doubles Sunday and received a bye as the top seeds. The Tennessee duo then beat Daniel McCall of Duke and Nick Ballou of Cal Luthuran 8-6 in the second round and fifth-seeded Gosea and Alex Jesse of Illinois 8-5.
Reese and Collins face another combined school team in the semifinals Monday, taking on Brady Bohrnstedt of Collins College and Will Stein of TCU.
Winners of the singles and doubles tournaments receive main draw wild cards to the ITA All-American Championships, college tennis' outdoor major of the fall season.
