Rhyne Williams, Tennys Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith all won their matches in straight sets to advance to the second round at the Champaign Challenger, played at the University of Illinois. The tournament serves as the year-end finale of the USTA Pro Circuit.
Williams faced former Texas A&M standout Austin Krajicek for the second week in a row. Williams had faced match points in their meeting a week ago in Knoxville, but the rematch Tuesday was not nearly as close. Williams broke Krajicek twice in both sets to win 6-2, 6-2. He now faces Daniel Smethurst of Great Britain.
Sandgren pulled off one of the three first-round upsets, ousting defending champion and eighth-seeded Alex Kuznetsov 6-4, 7-6 (4). He'll square off against recent Ohio State graduate Chase Buchanan today.
Smith played one of the early matches on Monday, beating South Korea's Suk-Young Jeong 6-3, 6-3. He'll play fellow Australian lefty Chris Guccione in the early match today. Guccione, a qualifier, upset second-seeded Mischa Zverev.
