Thanks to a difficult road schedule to start the season, the Vols debuted at No. 8 in the first ITA computerized national team rankings of the college tennis season on Tuesday.

The Vols (12-3) already have wins over No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 17 Illinois (twice) and No. 22 Wake Forest. Tennessee opens SEC play Friday against rival No. 9 Georgia on the road in a match normally reserved for the season finale.

New individual rankings were released. Sophomore Mikelis Libietis, who has a team-leading 24 wins this season, leads the way at No. 13, followed by No. 33 Hunter Reese and No. 76 Brandon Fickey. The ranking for Fickey is a career best.

In doubles, two of the Vols' three doubles teams are now in the national rankings. Libietis and Jarryd Chaplin slipped to No. 40, while Edward Jones and John Collins debuted at No. 34.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock On Hunter, Patterson

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock spoke about Vols receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter, who are taking part in the NFL Combine starting this Saturday. Here are his comments from a conference call held on Monday:

On Cordarrelle Patterson:
"From a height, width, speed, talent perspective, he might be one of the most talented physical specimens in this class. I think he's taking your breath away from the ability to make plays especially after he gets the ball in his hands. He's a special talent."

On Justin Hunter:
"He's one of those guys that's probably going to run fast. He's probably from a height, weight, speed per perspective going to flash at the Combine, open some eyes. I watched a lot of tape of him. I think he's raw and a developmental guy. For me, that's not a first round guy.

"Now he's got the tools, and in two years from now he might be special. But for me right now I've got him in the second round. I've got him about my eighth wide receiver on my board and a second round pick."

Jones, Vols Featured On SI.com Cover

Check out the story by SI.com's Zac Ellis: Butch Jones out to spark a renaissance at Tennessee

Here's the opening:

In late December, dozens of former Tennessee football players made their way to the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex on the UT campus in Knoxville. It was a concentration of some of the greatest Volunteers ever to wear orange, from Condredge Holloway, the first African-American quarterback to start in the SEC in the 1970s, to Carl Pickens, a former All-America receiver for the Vols in the 1990s. The event offered a chance to reminisce about the glory days, but it was more than that. It was an opportunity for Tennessee's newest football coach to show his appreciation for those who built the program he inherited only days earlier.

Butch Jones understands the importance of tapping into the resource of former players -- many of whom reportedly hadn't felt welcome around the Tennessee program in years. That's why he organized the meet-and-greet in Knoxville. "They had about three days notice, and we still had about 70 letter winners show up," said Jones. "We had another one in Nashville during the national championship game, and again we had over 70 individuals show up. In my short time here, those are the two nights that I really enjoyed, getting to meet all our former Vols.

Lady Vol Community Service In The News

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tenn/sports/w-baskbl/auto_bsivideo/8539582.jpeg?1360018705

The Lady Vol basketball team is frequently active in community service opportunities.  Last week, freshman Andraya Carter and sophomore Cierra Burdick paid a visit to East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville to see a young Tennessee fan. Both players have embraced the program's long-standing commitment to giving back to the community and enjoy helping make other people smile, whether it be from time shared, an autographed ball or assisting in a Habitat for Humanity house build or dedication.

Holly Warlick has lent her presence to Rotary International in its fight to eradicate polio globally. The Tennessee head coach spent some time last fall speaking to the local Rotary Club and posed for a photo that is being used in a current campaign to stamp out the disease worldwide.

Warlick joins Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, action movie star Jackie Chan, golf legend Jack Nicklaus and conservationist Jane Goodall - all of whom are raising their thumbs and forefingers in the "this close" gesture in the print, outdoor and broadcast public service announcements being distributed worldwide.

Below is a Knoxville News Sentinel article detailing the campaign, with a copy of Warlick's ad.
