Former Vol R.A. Dickey Profiled on 60 Minutes

Former Vol and current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey was profiled on CBS' 60 Minutes last night. Leslie Stahl reports on the knuckleballer.

Spani, Williams Await WNBA Draft

On Monday night at ESPN Headquarters in Bristol, Conn., the WNBA Draft will get underway, and female players from coast to coast and beyond will be watching to see where their basketball dreams take them next.

Two seniors from Tennessee will be among the interested viewers, hoping to become the 35th and 36th Lady Vols to continue their careers in the WNBA. Seniors Taber Spani (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Kamiko Williams (Clarksville, Tenn.) are not projected to be taken in the first round, which will be televised on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. The UT players, however, could hear their names called during the second or third rounds, which will be shown on ESPNU from 9-10:30 p.m. ET.

The telecast will also be available online at WatchESPN.com and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app.

Spani, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward, is ranked 35th in CollegeSportsMadness.com's WNBA Draft Rankings and Profiles. Williams, a 5-11 guard, is 37th on the list, which profiles the draft's top 40 prospects. Full Court has Williams going with the 22nd pick to the L.A. Sparks in its two-round mock draft.

Here are some stories about the WNBA Draft, Tennessee's draft candidates and a profile on Taber Spani's grandfather, Frosty Westering, who passed away over the weekend. Westering also had special meaning to UT's softball staff, as Co-Head Coach Ralph Weekly coached alongside Westering as his special teams coach for nine seasons, and Weekly's son, Marc, played quarterback for them at Pacific Lutheran University. Westering, Ralph and Marc Weekly and Karen Weekly, Ralph's wife and UT's other co-head softball coach, all are members of the PLU Hall of Fame.

ON TOUR: Williams Reaches 1st ATP Quarterfinal

Former tennis All-American Rhyne Williams took another step forward in his career Thursday, beating former top-10 star Ivo Karlovic to reach his first career ATP-level quarterfinal.

Williams held serve for the whole three set match and broke Karlovic just once, but that was enough for a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) victory in the second round of the US Men's Clay Court Championship, an ATP 250 event in Houston.

Williams was originally set to play top American Sam Querrey, but the 20th-ranked player withdrew prior to the match with injury. Karlovic, the 2007 champion ranked 136 in the world, was the lucky loser who replaced him in the draw.

Karlovic, who stands 6-foot-10, served a tournament-record 28 aces in the match against Williams, but that was not enough to beat the former Vol.

Williams, ranked 144, is now in his first career quarterfinal this afternoon where he will face another veteran, 35-year old Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain. Ramirez Hidalgo knocked off sixth-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2.

While Williams has won a Challenger on hard courts, it's important to note that Williams has already achieved professional success on clay, a surface generally less familiar to American players. All three of Williams' singles titles on the ITF Futures Circuit have come on clay courts.

In Mexico: John-Patrick Smith continued his winning ways in doubles on Thursday night. He and fellow Aussie Sam Groth beat wild cards Carsten Ball and Daniel Garza 6-4, 7-5. Smith is a career-best No. 94 in the doubles world rankings this week.

In Oklahoma: Tennys Sandgren, the top seed at the Oklahoma Futures, had his run end in the second round Thursday. Former Ole Miss Rebel Tucker Vorster defeated him 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Sandgren will now turn his attention to the series of American Challengers on clay.

The Knoxville News Sentinel has this story: Manning presents Summitt's foundation with donation and Photo Gallery

University of Tennessee football great Peyton Manning signed a large, ceremonial check this afternoon and added a touching note at the Cherokee Country Club, officially gifting the Pat Summitt Foundation with its largest donation to date.

"To Pat," he wrote, "together we will win."

The $500,000 commitment, made by Manning and his wife, Ashley, is the largest gift so far to the Pat Summitt Foundation, which formed soon after the Lady Vols coach emeritus announced her Alzheimer's disease diagnosis in 2011.

The four-time NFL MVP and current Denver Broncos quarterback was joined at the presentation by Tyler Summitt, who co-founded the organization with his mother, and foundation board chair Jim Haslam.

Pat Summitt spoke briefly, expressing her gratitude.

"This is a special, special day and it belongs to all of you as well as us," she said. "And obviously, Peyton, you're the best."
