Renfroe & Abbott Take Field In Saturday's Akron-Chicago Game

Ivy-and-Monica-NPF.jpg

Tennessee softball alums Ivy Renfroe and Monica Abbott played in the same game on Saturday as Renfroe's Akron Racers hosted Abbott's Chicago Bandits at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Bandits came away with a 6-5 win. Renfroe started the game for Akron and took the loss after throwing 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Abbott fanned six over three relief frames to earn the save.

The Racers and the Bandits will play again Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Abbott is scheduled to start for Chicago.

Smith's Upset Bid Falls Short at Wimbledon

John-Patrick Smith and doubles partner Paul Hanley pushed the third-seeded team at Wimbledon to the very brink in a five setter but could not close the deal in the second round.

Smith's first career experience on the famous grass courts ended Saturday with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 10-8 loss to Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares.

In a rain-delayed start to the match Friday, the two teams split sets before play was suspended because of darkness to start the fifth set. With only one set to play on Saturday, the teams made sure it was a long one.

Both teams held serve with relative ease through the fifth set. Smith and Hanley had two break points opportunities in the set but were unable to capitalize. Peya and Soares also had two break point chances and got one of them, breaking at 9-8 to end the extended fifth set to avoid the upset.

Soares entered the fortnight ranked sixth in the ATP World Rankings, and Peya was ranked eighth. Smith is currently ranked 80th in the world, but he should move into the top 75 when the new rankings arrive.

Wimbledon was the first tournament for Smith and Hanley as a doubles pairing. Smith has played doubles with seven different partners so far this season.

Saturday's Tennessee Football Briefing (6/29/13)

- On Nooga.com, check out a story comparing Butch Jones' task to that of the General Robert Neyland, when he was hired. Tennessee football lore says that General Robert Neyland was hired in 1926 and was charged to "even the score" with Vanderbilt, a program that had a commanding 17-2-2 advantage in the series at that point. That daunting challenge was almost completed by The General. The Vols put up a 16-3-2 mark against the Commodores during his tenure, bringing the series to 20-18-4 in favor of Vandy. If not for two military-related interruptions, it's almost a given that UT would've held the edge by the time Neyland left. Check out the full story from Daniel Lewis: Like Neyland, Jones' task is to catch UT up to rivals.

Parker's Balancing Act

Candace Parker does it all. She has two NCAA titles and two Olympic gold medals, and most recently, her UMMC Ekaterinburg team won the 2013 EuroLeague title, where she was named the playoffs' MVP. As arguably the best player in the league, the only thing left on her plate is a WNBA title.

Along with her dedication to the sport, Parker finds a way to balance being a mother, wife and WNBA All-Star. Louisa Thomas of Grantland.com gives an in-depth look at how the 27-year-old and former Lady Vol standout balances her roles.

Smith Wins Opening Doubles Match at Wimbledon

Former Vol John-Patrick Smith crossed off another career milestone Monday, winning his first career match to start Wimbledon.

Smith and fellow Aussie Paul Hanley, playing together for the first time, defeated Philipp Marx and Florin Mergea 6-3, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in their opening match at the All Queens Club. They will likely face the third-seeded team of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in the second round later this week.

Smith and Hanley finally started capitalizing on break point opportunities in the fourth set, coming back from 4-2 down to reel off four games in a row to earn the victory. They were 3 of 14 on break point opportunities, and that was enough for the win.

This year, Smith has appeared in the doubles main draw of all three Grand Slams so far and has a 2-2 record. He also won a match at the Australian Open in upset fashion.

Former Vol Letsinger Named Richmond Diving Coach

Another one of Dave Parrington's former athletes moved up the coaching ladders as former Vol Sean Letsinger was named the head diving coach at the University of Richmond earlier this week.

Lauren Gibson, who made the 2013 U.S. National Team with Raven Chavanne, shared some of her summer plans with The Washington Post. SI.com Names Hunter "Rookie To Watch"

Justin Hunter was the fourth receiver drafted this year. (Mark Humphrey/AP)

Tennessee product Justin Hunter has been highlighted by SI.com as a "Rookie To Watch" in their summer coverage. Rookies To Watch: Justin Hunter.

Here's a sampling of the story:

Tennessee's ideal offensive setup likely would put Hunter and Britt together on the outside, with Wright in the slot, Delanie Walker at tight end and Chris Johnson excelling out of the backfield.

On paper, that's an extremely dangerous group -- especially so if Hunter fills out his 6-foot-4 frame and becomes more of an all-around weapon.

Patterson may be flashier, even in the NFL, thanks to his big-play ability as well as his experience out of the backfield and returning kicks. For the Titans' needs, though, Hunter appears to be a near-perfect fit.

Don't be the slightest bit surprised if he winds up being the more productive NFL player.

Rhian Wilkinson On Expansion of Women's World Cup

In a recent ESPNW story by Bonnie D. Ford, Tennessee soccer legend and Canadian National Team member Rhian Wilkinson recently shared her thoughts on the expansion of the Women's World Cup to 24 teams, starting with the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.

"I think it's great for women's soccer," Wilkinson said in the story. "When you do that, initially, there will be some teams who aren't quite ready yet. It will raise the bar for those countries. I've been on a side that's been beaten like that. Scoring at will isn't any fun, either, but you have to go through those horrible steps.

"It'll be a steep and painful learning curve, and it depends on what you do with it. If the federations don't get behind [new qualifiers] and provide funding, there's nothing to be learned."

It's summertime in East Tennessee, far removed from hoops season, but there's plenty going on involving past and current members of the Lady Vol basketball program.

The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is hosting its 2013 induction festivities this weekend, and 2001 inductee Holly Warlick will be joining another well-known hall-of-famer in co-hosting a fundraiser.  The Lady Vol skipper will team up with none other than UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, himself a 2006 inductee, to co-host a gala reception on Saturday at the East Tennessee Historical Society. The event is sold out.

Barry Added to Ireland's World Championship Team

Former swimming All-American Barry Murphy was added to Ireland's squad for the FINA World Championships, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain, starting in late July.

Murphy was been one of Swimming Ireland's best, especially in the breaststroke. He represented Ireland in his Olympic debut last summer in London.

During his college career, Murphy called Knoxville home from 2006-09. He was a 19-time All-American during that time and served a vital role on the Vols' relay teams. He still holds the UT record for the 50-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 19.14 seconds at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

The United States' World Championship squad will be determined at a meet later this month, with the Vols and Lady Vols both set to bring a large contingent.
