This Day In #Vols History (Sept. 6)

The Vols are 3-1 all-time on Sept. 6, winning the last three games played on the date.

September 6 (3-1)

1980 - L, 15-16 No. 16 GEORGIA

1986 - W, 35-21 NEW MEXICO

1997 - W, 30-24 UCLA

2003 - W, 34-24 MARSHALL

In 1980, unranked Tennessee was looking to upset No. 16 Georgia in front of an expanded Neyland Stadium crowd of 89,749. The Vols built up a 15-2 lead by the third quarter, but a freshman running back named Herschel Walker entered the game and went on to score two touchdowns and thwarted the Vols upset effort.

The Vols return to the West Coast next weekend (at Oregon) seeking their first win on the left coast since a 30-24 victory over UCLA in 1997. In the win, Peyton Manning threw for 341 yards and two TDs for the third-ranked Vols. Manning connected with Jermaine Copeland (24 yards) and Marcus Nash (39 yards) on the scores. Nash had a career-high eight catches for 117 yards as the Vols moved to 2-0. Leonard Little sacked Cade McNown for a safety and Cory Gaines had a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown putting the Vols up 9-0 in the first quarter.
