NEWS AND NOTES

INJURY WRAP UP
There have been a few injuries to NFL Vols this season and this week saw another name added to the list:
Rookie Mychal Rivera took a hard hit to the head from Tennessee safety Michael Griffin (who was suspended for one game for his actions)
Rivera was down on the field for a few minutes but walked off on his own. He suffered a concussion on the play

WITTEN TALLIES TWO TDS
  • In the Cowboys 24-21 victory over the New York Giants, Jason Witten capitalized on two of his four receptions taking them to the house.
  • This marks the second time this season that Witten has nabbed two TDs in a game, the other also coming against the Giants in the season opener.
  • Witten has recorded multiple TD games just four times in his career, all against NFC East rivals as the previous two were against Philadelphia in 2010 and 2004.
  • Witten now has 857 catches in his 11-season NFL career, second most among NFL tight ends, 19th most all-time. He needs four catches next Sunday to pass Muhsin Muhammad for 18th place and six catches to move past Jimmy Smith into 17th place this weekend.

HUNTER HAS BREAKOUT GAME
  • Justin Hunter began his career with the Titans reeling in two passes in two weeks, both for touchdowns.
  • Since then, Hunter has been quiet on the field, and was unsure if he would play last weekend after suffering a concussion in Week 11.
  • But Hunter played, and had a breakout game for the Titans helping them past Oakland on the road, 23-19.
  • Hunter finished with a team-high six catches for 109 yards including a 54 yard TD

Vols 1998 National Championship Featured On The Postgame

As part of their weekly look back at some great college football teams in history, Yahoo! Sports 'The Postgame' profiles the 1998 Vols this week. Check out Jon Finkel's story:  Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hall Recall Tennessee Volunteers' Run To 1998 National Championship

No Peyton, No Problem.

If a T-shirt was going to be made about the 1998 Tennessee football team, the above slogan may have perfectly described the squad that went on to win the national championship one year after Peyton Manning left for the NFL. But who needs a T-Shirt when you have Tee Martin?

Jamal Lewis, the eventual Super Bowl Champion and single-season 2,000-yard NFL rusher, was a sophomore on that Tennessee team and was close to its starting quarterback, Martin.

"Tee was my mentor and helped bring me along," Lewis says. "He was like my big brother. I always knew he could play. He had a big arm, and he could use his legs to get out of tough situations. I came off a great freshman season and we had planned to rely more on the running game after Peyton left to help get Tee more comfortable."

When Manning was quarterbacking the team, both Lewis and one of the team's captains, kicker Jeff Hall, say that during his tenure, it always felt like everything was riding on his shoulders. After Manning, there was a palpable sense that everyone on the following year's team knew they'd have to do their part and stay loyal to each other to win.

Happy Birthday - Nov. 21: Charles Folger, Ryan Jenkins

On Nov. 21, we celebrate the birthdays of redshirt freshman defensive lineman Charles Folger and freshman wide receiver Ryan Jenkins.

Colquitt Bowl IX
The ninth Colquitt Bowl took place on Sunday night as Kansas City and Denver squared off in Mile High City. Britton's Broncos got the best of Dustin's Chiefs to improve the younger brother's record to 6-3 over his older sibling.
Britton finished with 6 punts for a 45.8 avg. dropping one inside the 20 while Dustin won the punting battle with seven punts for a 51.1 avg. also dropping one in the 20
Manning finished the game 24-40 for 323 yards and a TD, his 81st career 300+ yard performance. He has a league high nine 300+ yard games in 10 games this season.
Malik Jackson was in on a lot of pressure of QB Alex Smith finishing the game with a half a sack as well as two QBH and two passes defended
Jackson's two pass break ups give him four for the season and put him in a tie for second most (4) PBUs among defensive linemen in 2013 with J.J. Watt

CP Makes First Career Start
This weekend wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson made his first career start for the Minnesota Vikings in Seattle
CP finished the game with three catches for 28 yards and four kick returns for 117 yards.
The rookie needs just 38 kick return yards this weekend to reach the century mark and leads all NFL kick returners with 962 yards and two touchdowns this year or an average of 34.4 yards/return.

Simms With First Career TD Pass
Coming into the game in relief of Geno Smith who threw three INTs at Buffalo Sunday, Matt Simms recorded his first career TD pass, a 13-yard pass to Jeff Cumberland in the fourth quarter

MANNING BEING MANNING
In a close fight on the road at San Diego Sunday Peyton Manning continued to do what he does best, helping the Broncos to a 28-20 victory.
During the game:
Manning reached 300 yards passing for the 8th time in Denver's nine games, tying for the most in NFL history at this point (also had 8 in '09). With his 300-yard passing game, Manning extended his NFL record to 80.
Manning also threw for four TDs in the win, the fifth time in nine games while extending his NFL record to 27 games.
Three of Manning's TD passes came in the first half of the game, the 25th time in his career (and third this season) that he has accomplished that feat.
Through nine games this season, Peyton has thrown for 33 touchdowns, tied with Tom Brady (33, 2007) for the most through nine games.
Peyton also currently hold the NFL's longest active streak of consecutive games with a TD pass (32)

WITTEN SETTING RECORDS
Though he had just two catches against New Orleans on Sunday night, Jason Witten moved up the career receptions chart breaking a tie with Irving Fryar for 19th all-time (853) in NFL History.
Witten has also now caught at least one pass in 80-straight games, second all-time in Cowboys history (Michael Irvin, 117 from 1990-98). Witten's last game without a reception was at the New York Giants on Nov. 2, 2008.
