This Day In #Vols History (Jan. 1)

Jan. 1 has been the day for  many historic moments in Tennessee football history. Here's a look a several of most notable events and all the games played on the day.

1951: Won the national championship against the University of Texas 20-14, to result in a 10-0 regular-season record. Tailback Hank Lauricella's 75-yard run in this game is considered one of the best by NBC's Bill Stern.

1985: Win 35-7 against the University of Miami (Fla.) in the Sugar Bowl. The Vols finish 1st in the SEC and 4th in the AP.

1990: The win over Arkansas, 31-27, in Dallas was the Vols 600th.

1996: A Vols win 20-14 over Ohio State in the Florida Citrus Bowl earns the Vols a No. 2 ranking in the CNN-USA Today coach's poll.

2005: The Vols win 38-7 against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. Rick Clausen was named MVP of the game.
