Abbott Looking Sharp In NPF Action

Week 5 of the NPF season featured another four-game series in Round Rock, Texas, between Monica Abbott's and Ellen Renfroe's Chicago Bandits and Madison Shipman's USSSA Pride.

The Pride took the first two games on June 26-27, but the Bandits answered with a doubleheader sweep on June 28. Renfroe started in the circle in the first game, tossing three innings with two earned runs and one strikeout as Chicago took a 6-3 win. Abbott enjoyed her best performance of the season in the second game of the doubleheader, tossing a 12-strikeout, seven-inning shutout that gave the Bandits a 3-0 victory.

The two teams featuring Tennessee's alums will meet again in a four-game series July 31 to Aug. 3 in Rosemont, Ill.

Giving Back, Witten Holds 12th Annual Camp

An annual tradition made its way to Elizabethton's Dave Rider Field on Saturday afternoon as hometown hero Jason Witten hosted his 12th annual Score Foundation Football Camp.

This year the free camp saw more than 1600 kids pre-registered for the two-session day.

"It's awesome to come back and it's another opportunity to give back," said Witten. "It's awesome to see how this camp has grown. It's special. I can think back of many years sitting on this field and a lot of great memories, not just as a player, but growing up as a ballboy and everything that took place before I started player here. The kids love the camp and its always humbling to see how many from this area come and how many travel in for it."

Stokes Meets With Memphis Media

A day after being drafted by his hometown team, the Memphis Grizzlies, Jarnell Stokes met with the media about living out his lifelong dream of playing with the Grizz. Here's a look at the coverage on Stokes and fellow draft pick Jordan McRae, who was headed to Philadelphia on Friday. 

McRae will meet with the Philadelphia media on Saturday at 11 a.m. The presser will be streamed live on Sixers.com

Serrano On Radio In Alaska

Tennessee baseball head coach Dave Serrano is in Alaska visiting the Vols playing summer ball in the Alaska Baseball League. On Friday night, he was a special guest on the Mat-Su Miners broadcast. 

With Serrano in attendance, Nick Senzel smacked a home run for his second game in a row, going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Jordan Rodgers went 1-for-4 in the 4-1 win for Mat-Su.

Heron Competes at Crippen Meet of Champs

Tennessee freshman David Heron won the 1,500-meter freestyle on Thursday at the Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo, California.

He won the race in 15 minutes, 24.82 seconds. The time is the sixth-fastest for an American this year. It is also the fastest time by a teenager or NCAA-level swimmer in 2014.  

The meet is run by the Mission Viejo Nadadores, Heron's hometown club growing up. 

Heron, who finished fifth in the 5K and 10K USA Swimming Open Water Championships earlier this month, still has a busy summer of competition ahead. He will represent the U.S. in the Lac St. Jean World Cup in Canada on July 24. He will also be among the Tennessee contingent racing at the Phillips 66 National Championships, which runs Aug. 6-10.

Shipman Doubles Off Abbott In NPF Action

On Thursday, June 26, Tennessee softball legends Madison Shipman and Monica Abbott squared off for the third time in National Pro Fastpitch action as Shipman's USSSA Pride took a 7-1 win over Abbott's Chicago Bandits.

In the bottom of the fifth, Shipman connected on a ball from Abbott high and inside for a double down the right field line. Abbott had Shipman's number entering that at-bat, as Shipman was 0-for-8 against the 6-3 lefty before the double.

Shipman recently won the prestigious 2014 Honda Sports Award for softball. Abbott won the 2007 Honda Sports Award for softball.

The USSSA Pride leads the league with a 13-4 record and the Chicago Bandits are second at 8-7. The Pride holds a 3-2 edge in the season series between the two teams. USSSA and Chicago will square off in three more games this weekend, playing Friday at 8:05 p.m. ET with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. ESPN3, WatchESPN and Cox Sports Television will broadcast all three games. Check your local listings and cable provider.

 We also celebrate the birthdays of two former standouts on the gridiron: Chad Clifton and Travis Stephens. An offensive lineman, Clifton was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2000 and went on to win two Super Bowls during his 12 seasons with the organization. Stephens posted the greatest single season in Tennessee running backs history when he carried 291 times for 1,464 yards in 2001. Both marks still stand as program records.

Will Maddox is staying in hotels, riding from one town to another on buses and living his dream.

The former Gainesville High and University of Tennessee standout recently signed with the Detroit Tigers, after being selected in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month. He started playing with the short-season Class A Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League last week.

"Being drafted was obviously a great privilege," Maddox said in a phone interview Tuesday. "It's been my dream since I was a little kid to play professional baseball, and this gives me that opportunity."

Johannessen Sets Course Record


On Monday, Tennessee signee Kristian Johannessen set a course record (63) in the Open Regional Qualifying at Bruntsfield Links (Scotland).

The Norwegian amateur is now a step closer to playing in next month's Open Championship. En route to his record breaking score of 63, Johannessen connected on five consecutive birdies (13th - 17th hole).

"I came over just for the chance -- I had never been to Edinburgh before, so it was nice to visit," said a thrilled Johannessen.

He became one of 134 successful players at 13 courses in England, Scotland and Ireland who now go through to the 36-hole Final Qualifying next Tuesday at Gailes Links, Hillside, Sunningdale New and Woburn.

Big Week For Lady Vols

The Tennessee women's golf program is gearing up for a big week.

On the home front, three Lady Volunteers are competing in the 82nd Tennessee Women's Amateur Championship. After 36-holes of Stroke Play competition, Blakesly Warren (T-3rd), AJ Newell (T-5th) and Teleri Hughes (T-8th) all advanced to Wednesday's Match Play competition. View the full leaderboard.

Two Tennessee legends had great weekend while playing in the NPF. Rookie Madison Shipman smacked her first career pro home run with the USSSA Pride on Sunday as the Pride beat the Chicago Bandits, 6-1.

On Saturday, Monica Abbott made her season debut with the Bandits and dealt the Pride a 7-0 loss. Abbott twirled a four-hit shutout while striking out seven. 

The teams play again on Monday and Tuesday.

Saint Preux Wins UFC174 Match By Submission

Former Vols Football player turned MMA star Ovince Saint Preux won his UFC174 match by submission on Saturday night in Vancouver. He took down Ryan Jimmo in the second round at the 2:50 mark in a light heavyweight battle. OSP is now 16-5 overall in his UFC career.

#VFL Ovince Saint Preux Set For UFC 174 On Saturday

Former Tennessee football player Ovince Saint Preux will compete in his 21st fight at UFC 174 on Saturday night in Vancouver at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT. He will take on Ryan Jimmo in the UFC Light Heavyweight Division.

Stokes Works Out For Hometown Grizzlies

Former Tennessee basketball star Jarnell Stokes worked out for his hometown Memphis Grizzlies on Monday as he continues to prepare for the NBA Draft. 

Stokes spoke about how playing for the Grizzlies would be a dream come true.  "I grew up watching them. I was a season-ticket holder in the nose bleed just three years ago," Stokes, the former Tennessee forward, said following a pre-draft workout with the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. "It's surreal right now being able to work out for them."

VFL Matt Duffy Slams 3 HRs for OKC RedHawks

Former Vols standout Matt Duffy made history on Monday night with the Triple-A Oklahoma City RedHawks as he slammed three home runs in a 6-2 win over Salt Lake. Duffy became the sixth player in RedHawks history to hit three homers in a game.

Duffy hit solo home runs in the second, fourth and eighth innings for the third multi-home run game of his career. He also homered Sunday in Omaha and now has four homers in the past two games.

The RedHawks infielder became the second player in the PCL to hit three homers in a game this season, following Tacoma's Jabari Blash, who did it June 3 against El Paso.

Duffy had struggled early on with OKC since being promoted to the Astros' top affiliate. He was just 2-for-23 prior to Sunday's action. Since then he has hit four homers and raised his average to .194 with the four home runs and seven RBIs. Duffy hit .302 with Corpus Christi before being recalled in late May.

Happy Birthday - June 9: VFL Craig Colquitt

On June 9, we celebrate the birthday of Knoxville native and two-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Craig Colquitt. The VFL played for the Vols from 1975-1977 before being drafted by the Steelers in Round 3 of the NFL Draft. Craig is the the father of current NFL punters and former Vols, Dustin and Britton Colquitt. Dustin, a Pro Bowler in 2012, plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Britton currently plays for the Denver Broncos. Craig's nephew, Jimmy Colquitt, was also an All-American punter for the Vols. 


VFL Andy Simunic Signs With G-Braves

Former Tennessee baseball star Andy Simunic has signed with the Gwinnett Braves, the Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate

Simunic, 28, was the 17th round selection of the Houston Astros in the 2008 June draft out of the University of Tennessee. He batted .276 with 59 doubles, eight triples, 11 home runs, 161 RBIs and 64 stolen bases over parts of seven seasons in the Astros' organization. Simunic played 30 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, batting .263 (25-for-95) with five doubles, one home run, 10 RBIs and one stolen base. He was released by the Astros on June 1.

Happy Birthday - June 6: VFL Bill Bates

On June 6, we celebrate the birthday of All-Pro safety and Vol For Life Bill Bates. The Farragut High School product played for the Vols from 1979-1982 and went on to become a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys. Bates was back on campus recently and had the following to say about the power of Big Orange. His son, Dillon Bates, joined Team 118 this summer.

Shipman, Renfroe Shine As NPF Rookies

Tennessee softball alums Madison Shipman and Ellen Renfroe were among several National Pro Fastpitch rookies who shined in the league's 2014 opening weekend last week. Shipman and Renfroe were among 33 NPF rookies who saw action.

Shipman, who was drafted No. 2 overall by the USSSA Pride, recorded her first career hit, an infield single, in her NPF debut on May 30 against the Pennsylvania Rebellion.

Renfroe, who had signed with the Chicago Bandits as a free agent, notched her first career victory on May 31, tossing three hitless relief frames with one strikeout in the Bandits' 5-3 win over the Akron Racers.

Shipman and the Pride open a four-game series against the Rebellion from June 5-8 at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pa. Renfroe and the Bandits host the Racers for two games from June 6-7 and then head to Akron for two more games from June 9-10.

Dobbs Named One Of 14 Smartest College Football Players

NFL.com has named its 14 smartest college football players for 2014. The Vols' sophomore quarterback Joshua Dobbs has earned a spot on the list:

    Spend a few minutes with Dobbs and you can understand why he makes this list. He started four games under center for the Vols last year as a true freshman, but still managed to keep his grades up in the aerospace engineering major he's picked. We're sure Alabama's defense is just as tough as honors calculus class.

    Whoriskey Sweeps Pro Circuit Titles

    Former Lady Vol Caitlin Whoriskey began her summer off on the right foot this weekend sweeping the singles and doubles titles from the ITF Head/First Federal $10,000 tournament at Van Der Meer Tennis Club.

    Caitlin Whoriskey is unlikely to forget her first ever USTA Pro Circuit singles championship.

    Her gritty display during a spectacular second set sealed a dynamic double for the Cape Cod native. A day after Whoriskey and playing partner Sonja Molnar captured the doubles championship, Whoriskey outlasted No. 1 seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-6 to win the ITF Head/First Federal $10,000 tournament at Van Der Meer Tennis Club.
