Heron Competes at Crippen Meet of Champs

Tennessee freshman David Heron won the 1,500-meter freestyle on Thursday at the Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo, California.

He won the race in 15 minutes, 24.82 seconds. The time is the sixth-fastest for an American this year. It is also the fastest time by a teenager or NCAA-level swimmer in 2014.

The meet is run by the Mission Viejo Nadadores, Heron's hometown club growing up.

Heron, who finished fifth in the 5K and 10K USA Swimming Open Water Championships earlier this month, still has a busy summer of competition ahead. He will represent the U.S. in the Lac St. Jean World Cup in Canada on July 24. He will also be among the Tennessee contingent racing at the Phillips 66 National Championships, which runs Aug. 6-10.
