    Wednesday's Tennessee Football Briefing (7/30/14)

We are just two days away from the start of Tennessee football practice on Friday night. On Thursday, Butch Jones and selected players will meet with the media to preview the 2014 season. That press conference will be streamed live on UTSports.com.

On Tuesday, Butch Jones spoke to Vol Nation in the Mid-State at the Wildhorse Saloon, which is covered in today's briefing.

Here's a look at the latest news on the Vols and Team 118:

On Tuesday evening (7/29) against the Yankees, #VFL and current Texas first baseman J.P. Arencibia had a career night at the plate despite the Rangers' 12-11 defeat at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

Arencibia went 4-for-5 with two homers and a career-high seven RBIs, including a grand slam home run in the 7th inning. The grand slam sparked the beginning of an offensive rally for the Rangers, marking the first grand slam home run by a Rangers player this season and the first since July 3, 2013. Arencibia's performance was also just the 17th time in club history for a player to collect seven RBIs in a single game.

Since his return to the Major Leagues on July 18, the former Vol is 11-for-44 (.250) with five home runs and 16 RBI in 12 games.

Alpharetta, Georgia native Josh Dobbs is featured in the Neighbor Newspapers in his hometown. The sophomore quarterback is competing to be the Vols' starting quarterback in his second season on Rocky Top. Read the feature: Former Alpharetta star Dobbs shines at Tennessee

Here's the start of the piece:

Joshua Dobbs didn't waste much time in making an impact on the college level at Tennessee.

The former Alpharetta standout stepped into the starting quarterback role as a true freshman at Tennessee last year and never looked back as he quickly established himself as a player to watch in the SEC.

Dobbs played the last five games at quarterback - including the last four as a starter - for a Tennessee team that went 5-7 in 2013. He completed 72-of-121 passes for 695 yards and two touchdowns - compiling a 59.5 percent completion percentage in the process.

"I've always trusted in my skills and ability," Dobbs said. "The coaching staff has done a great job with all the quarterbacks to be able to play when needed. So when my number was called, I was able to perform. I still have some things to work on and, of course, that has been the key focus throughout the spring and into the summer and into training camp."

Among the key quotes from Coach Jones:

"There has been a complete shift culturally," Jones said. "It's not where we need to be yet, but every day you see progress. ... I think we're right there in terms of mentality, the standard, the expectations."

"There isn't any bigger stage in the country than Tennessee football," Jones said. "... Fans can see the progress we're making. Yes, we expect to win -- 5-7 is not up to our standards. But they see the improvements in the style of play. They can feel the energy. It's contagious."
