Washington Post Feature On #VFL Jason Witten

The Washington Post has a fantastic feature on #VFL Jason Witten and his rise from a defensive end at Tennessee to Hall of Fame tight end.

A few years ago, a man who works for a real estate investment company in Utah attended a Dallas Cowboys game in Indianapolis. Watching from the stands, Neil Johnson focused his attention on his former teammate at the University of Tennessee, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, a hall-of-famer in waiting who acknowledges his laudable career was made possible only by Johnson's bad luck and Witten's eventual willingness to take a leap of faith.

"If it wasn't for that," Witten said recently, "I would never have had the career I've had."

Fifteen years ago, Johnson had suffered a knee injury that ended his college career. What came next set in motion a series of unusual events that led both of them here - Witten reluctantly moving to the position that would make him a star and, eventually, an almost certain NFL Hall of Famer.

Back in 2000, Witten was a freshman defensive end hoping for a chance to play. Johnson, meanwhile, was ready for his breakout year. He was a blocking specialist who'd been on the Volunteers' roster when they won the 1998 national championship. But this would be the year his hard work finally paid off. Then in practice one day, something popped in his knee, and just like that, Johnson's season was finished.

Coach Phillip Fulmer felt cornered. The season was bearing down on him, and now he only had one tight end, a junior named John Finlayson. Fulmer combed his roster for depth, stopping when he found a freshman who had been raised in Washington, D.C., before eventually moving to Tennessee. Witten was the grandson of legendary Elizabethton (Tenn.) High football coach Dave Rider and a young defensive end who had played some tight end in high school - a mix of understanding and experience Fulmer needed during a time like this.

Jackson, Denver D Shine vs. Oakland

Malik Jackson and the Denver Broncos defense stood out on Sunday. Jackson made a season-high six tackles (his most since making six stops against Buffalo on Dec. 7, 2014) and recorded one sack as the Broncos limited the Oakland raiders to just 288 yards of offense.

Manning Sets Overall Career Passing Yards Record

Peyton Manning broke the league record for most overall career passing yards in the third quarter of Sunday's 16-10 win over the Raiders. He now has 77,725 passing yards over 18 seasons, including the playoffs. He needs another 914 yards to surpass the regular-season record of 71,838 passing yards, held by former Packers quarterback Brett Favre, for the most all-time.

Vols In The NFL - Week 4 Update

Foster Makes Season Debut

VFL Arian Foster made his season debut this past Sunday in the Houston Texans' 48-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Foster, who missed the first three game of the season due to a groin injury he suffered early in training camp, had eight carries for 10 yards and three catches for 25 yards.

Moore Signs With Bills

VFL wide receiver Denarius Moore signed with the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday. The five-year veteran had a great start to his career in Oakland as a fifth-round pick in 2011. In fact in his second career game against the Bills that season he had five catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Over his first three seasons Moore had 130 receptions for 2,054 yards and 17 touchdowns. Coaching changes in Oakland led to the Raiders allowing him to become a free agent this past offseason. He signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals, but was released during cuts at the end of the summer.

Moore has 4.45 speed and familiarity with Bills wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, who coached him his rookie year in Oakland. The 26-year old also has kick and punt return experience.
