Former UT Track Standouts To Aid U.S. Cause At Pan Am Games

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A pair of former Tennessee track & field standouts will represent the United States on Oct. 27 and 28, when they compete in the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Former Vol sprinter Rubin Williams (2005-08) and former Lady Vol distance runner Jackie Areson (2007-11) will be on hand at Telmex Athletics Stadium for the 16th edition of the Pan Am Games, which ranks as the world's second-largest multi-sport event behind the Summer Olympics.   Williams is slated to run in the 4x100m relay semifinals at 3:45 p.m. ET (2:45 p.m. CT) on Thursday and in the finals at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT)  on Friday, should the U.S. advance.  Areson, meanwhile, will have only one race, the 1500m final, at 6:05 p.m. ET (5:05 p.m. CT) on Thursday.

During his UT career, Williams was a 16-time All-American and five-time SEC champion, winning an NCAA Indoor title in the 200 meters in 2008 and finishing second indoors and out in the 200m in 2007.  At the SEC level, he raced to indoor crowns in the 55m in 2006, and the 200m in 2007 and 2008, as well as outdoor titles in the 200m (2007) and 4x100m relay (2007).

Areson, meanwhile, was a four-time All-American and five-time SEC victor on the oval, winning an NCAA Indoor crown in the 5000 meters in 2011. She also claimed SEC crowns in the 3000m (indoors) in 2011, the distance medley relay in 2010 and 2011 and the 5000m (indoors/outdoors) in 2010.  In cross country, she earned All-South Region distinction in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and was All-SEC in 2009 during a career that saw her make three appearances at the NCAA Championship meet.
