Tennessee alum Shannon Doepking announced her retirement from National Pro Fastpitch after five seasons on Monday.

"I never thought I would have the opportunity to play after college and I'm so thankful for those five years," Doepking said. "I've met new people, made amazing friends, won a championship and found a new home in Rosemont."

Doepking was drafted by the Akron Racers in 2008 as the 15th overall selection. After her rookier season with Arkon, she was traded to the USSSA Pride for one year before being traded to the Tennessee Diamonds om 2010. Doepking signed with the Chicago Bandits prior to the 2011 season and enjoyed her best professional season, batting .263 with a .377 on-base mark and six RBIs. She caught former UT teammate Monica Abbot's perfect game on Aug. 4, 2011. She also helped lead the Bandits to their second NPF Championship in 2011. In 2012, her final season, Doepking posted a .229 batting average with 13 RBIs and three home runs.

Doepking starred at Tennessee from 2005-08, playing in 266 games with 256 starts. In her four-year Lady Vol career, she hit .277 (186-for-672) with 18 home runs, three triples, 36 doubles, 141 RBIs and 71 runs.

Softball Takes Part In Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade (1/21)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee softball team took part in Knoxville's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Monday morning.

The Lady Vols gathered at St. John's Lutheran Church early Monday morning before heading down to the parade route. The team handed out candy to local children in the parade honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy as one of the most influential civil rights activists in American history.

"This is an event our team looks forward to every year," Tennessee co-head coach Karen Weekly said. "Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of great courage and conviction who stood against tremendous opposition to fight for equality. We were proud to join in the march on this day of celebration. It was especially neat to march with the members of St. John's Lutheran Church, the faith community of which Ralph and I are members and who are so supportive of our Lady Vol softball players."
