Lady Vol Hoops Update

 

With many reports on Tennessee's shocking comeback in its season opener against Middle Tennessee, the media focused a great deal on the differences in the 2012-13 season to this year. Also included is a feature from ESPNW about the new fouling rules.

The Lady Vols head home to Knoxville after their 9 p.m. tipoff game in Chapel Hill, N.C., verses North Carolina on ESPN2 as a part of Big Monday.

Happy Birthday - Oct. 29: Dickey, Henry, Marciniak, Solernou

There are lots of birthdays with Tennessee ties to celebrate on Oct. 29.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey, a three-time All-American while pitching for the Vols in the 1990s.



Former Vols running back Travis Henry, who is Tennessee's all-time leading rusher with 3,078 yards.



All-American women's basketball legend Michelle Marciniak, the MVP of the 1996 Final Four.



Current women's swimmer senior Lauren Solernou also celebrates her birthday today.

SEC Media Day Buzz

The 2013 SEC Basketball Media Days were held Oct. 16-17 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Birmingham, Ala. The Lady Vols took their turn on Thursday, with head coach Holly Warlick and senior guard Meighan Simmons making the rounds and participating in interview sessions with various print, TV, radio and internet reporters and producers.  Below is some of the coverage of the event as it pertains to Tennessee women's basketball.

The Lady Vols have been picked by the media to repeat as SEC championships in 2014, and Simmons and sophomore forward Bashaara Graves have been voted to the five-player preseason All-SEC First Team. Simmons also has been predicted to repeat as SEC Player of the Year.

Lady Vol Hoops Update

 

Former Lady Vol and current record-holder for most three-pointers in a season, Angie Bjorklund was hired as Director of Operations by head coach Jennifer Mountain at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, Calif. Bjorklund played for Tennessee from 2007-2011, accumulating one national championship, three regular season SEC titles and three SEC Tournament Championships. During her time as a Lady Vol, Bjorklund was named 2010 and 2011 All-SEC First Team, 2010 and 2011 Associated Press All-American Honorable mention, 2009 All-SEC Second-Team and 2008 SEC Rookie of the Year.

Among other stories, Knoxville was selected to host the early rounds of the 2014 NCAA women's basketball tournament and the media's coverage of Tuesday's practice highlighted the beginning of the Lady Vols' 2013-14 season.

With the official start of Lady Vol basketball practice this week and the season just around the corner, there were several hoops-related stories appearing this week. Among the topics, recaps from Tuesday's open practice, a story about Holly Warlick's sister, news about an honor for former Lady Vol Bridgette Gordon and information concerning the airing of Pat Summitt Foundation public service announcements on Xfinity by Comcast during October. The spots feature Summitt, former Lady Vol Kara Lawson and former Vol and NFL football great Peyton Manning.
