Happy Birthday - April 18

We've got three birthdays to celebrate on this 18th day of April as we send 'happy birthday' wishes to swimmer Caroline Finkbeiner and Eve Repic of women's tennis, not to mention former Lady Vol golf standout Erica Popson

Finkbeiner recently concluded her junior season with the Tennessee swimming and diving program. She competed in five events for UT: the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. She earned her best finish of the season, a runner-up placement, at Queens after swimming 500-yard freestyle in five minutes, 4.56 seconds. In total, she racked up nine top-10 finishes over the 2014-15 season. Finkbeiner turns 21 years old today.

A sophomore from Ontario, Canada, Repic recently concluded her second season on Rocky Top with a singles record of 16-11. For her career, she is 38-23 overall. Repic went out with a win, defeating Emily Flickinger of Auburn 6-1, 7-6 during the opening round of the 2015 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament. She was ranked as high as No. 40 this season. Born this day in 1995, Repic turns 20 today.

A four-year standout for Tennessee women's golf from 2009-13, Popson recorded eight top finishes over her career for the Orange and White. She won top medalist honors at the 2011 SEC Championship, firing a three day total of 210 (66-74-70) before going on to another victory at the NCAA West Regional. Popson finished her career with 18 top-10 finishes, 51 rounds of par or better, and a scoring average of 73.40. She was a three-time All-American and a two-time All-SEC performer. Following graduation, she earned membership status into the LPGA and earned full exemption into the LPGA Tour for 2014.

Happy birthday, Caroline, Eve, and Erica!

Happy Birthday - April 9

On April 9 we're celebrating the birthday of Tennessee women's golfer AJ Newell and UT hall of fame baseball player Sam Ewing!

A senior from Tampa, Florida, Newell has posted seven rounds of par or better this season, including a career-low 67 at the Cougar Classic. Through eight tournaments, she owns a scoring average of 72.91 -- the lowest of her career on Rocky Top. Newell and her teammates are off this week, but return to action next weekend in Birmingham, Alabama, for the SEC Championships. Born this day in 1993, Newell turns 22 years old today.

Today we also wish a happy 65th birthday to former Vol and Major Leaguer, Sam Ewing. One of the best to ever play in Tennessee's history, Ewing posted an incredible .464 batting average during his senior season in Knoxville. He drove in 25 runs on 45 hits that season to go along with eight home runs and 33 runs scored. Unsurprisingly, he was a first team All-America selection by both the Sporting News and the ABCA. He finished his career with a .411 batting average before going on to play professionally with the Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays organizations. He was elected to the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.

Happy birthday AJ and Sam!

Happy Birthday - Feb. 12

We've got three Big Orange birthdays to celebrate today! Sending out special birthday wishes to current track and field student-athlete Felecia Majors, as well as VFLs Inky Johnson (football) and Chessey Thomas (women's golf)!

A sophomore from Lorton, Virginia, Felecia Majors is coming off a freshman season in which she earned All-America honors in both the 200 meters and 400 meters during the indoor season. She is UT's current freshman record-holder in the 400 meters with a time of 52.65. In the outdoor season, Majors earned three top-20 finishes at her first SEC Outdoor Championships. The 2015 indoor season has seen Majors compete in the 60-meter dash, 200 meters, 300 meters, 400 meters, 500 meters, and long jump, not to mention the 4x400-meter relay and distance medley relay. Majors turns 20 years old today.

A 2013 SEC Football Legend, Inky Johnson played in 23 games for Tennessee at defensive back before his promising career was cut short by injury. He finished his career with 41 tackles, one sack, one interception, and 10 pass breakups. Using his story of overcoming adversity, Johnson has become a mentor and regarded public speaker for underprivileged youth in both Knoxville and his hometown of Atlanta.

Chessey Thomas graduated from the Tennessee women's golf program last year and concluded her career ranked eighth on the Lady Vols' all-time career low average list (75.15). She notched one tournament victory while on Rocky Top, taking the Lady Bulldog Individual on Feb. 8, 2014. For her career, Thomas posted 21 rounds of par or better, four top-10 finishes, and a career-low round of 66.

Lady Vol Golf Earning Recognition

After a successful fall season, including two runner-up finishes, the Lady Vols are among the teams being talked about as both most improved and surprising leading into the spring season.

Lance Ringler of GolfWeek says: "For me, it's the Lady Vols. Judi Pavon has a strong, athletic team that could cause some damage if it is able to stick around in the postseason. Don't be surprised if this team turns a few heads this spring."
