Lady Vols In The Polls



The newest ITA Tennis Polls are out and the Lady Vols remain in 25th in the country for the week of Feb. 12.

Individually, junior Brynn Boren jumped from 23rd to 18th place after the first month of play while senior Kata Szekely dropped from No. 25 to No. 34.

Boren and Szekely, who were ranked 34th in the country in the fall, and 12th to begin the spring season jumped all the way to third in the country in doubles.

The duo ranks behind No. 1 Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC and No. 2 Alexa Guarachi and Mary Ann Macfarlane of Alabama.

Lady Vols To Compete at Dick Vitale Classic

While Kata Szekely and Brynn Boren are taking part in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, five Lady Vols have traveled the other direction and are taking part in the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic this weekend at the Athletic Center of Lakewood Ranch in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Pluskota Wins Rock Hill Rocks Open Doubles Tourney

Competing with Jacqueline Cako, former Lady Vol Natalie Pluskota took the Rock Hill Rocks Open doubles tournament title Sunday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chieh-Yu Hsu and Chi Chi Scholl.

Pluskota and Cako battled to the finals easily taking their round one match up with Anamika Bhargava and Isabella Robbiani 6-4, 6-2.

They battled back to take down the No. 2 seed of Duque-Marino and Adriana Perez 1-6, 7-6 (2), [10-4] followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win over Angelina Gabueva and Arina Rodionova in the semis.

With the win, Pluskota and Cako earn a split of the $25,000 prize money with some solid play over the course of the weekend.

Szekely Falls In ITA Qualifier

Singles Results

In the singles qualifier at the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Tuesday, senior Kata Szekely fell in a tough three set battle to No. 81 ranked Elizabeth Epstein of Yale, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The No. 28 ranked singles player, Szekely took part in the contest after a grueling 9-8 doubles victory earlier in the day with partner Brynn Boren.

Szekely fell in the first set of the day 3-6, battled back for a 7-6 second set win and dropped a tough third set 4-6.

Szekely will be back in action, however, in the doubles qualifying second round alongside Boren Wednesday morning.

Boren, Szekely Advance at Riviera ITA All-American Championships

Doubles Results

On day one of the Riviera ITA Women's All-American Championships, the No. 34 ranked doubles pair of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely advanced on to round two of qualifying.

The duo earned a 9-8 victory over Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifier of Auburn University in round one and will move on to face the No. 5 seed of Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic of UNLV tomorrow.

Kasler and Pfiefier won three doubles matches in two days this weekend to earn their spot in the qualifying round.

Szekely, ranked No. 28, also played a singles match Tuesday. Results to follow later.

Lady Vols Furman Fall Classic Tennis Update (9/22)

Day two of doubles competition has wrapped up at the Furman Fall Classic.

In the flight one championship match, Caitlyn Williams and Joanna Henderson fell to their counterparts from North Carolina, 8-4. The duo finished second in their first competition together in 2012, and in just their seventh match together as a partnership.

Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely took home fifth place in flight one after defeating Jaklin Alawi and Dominika Kanakova from South Carolina 8-5 in their final doubles match of the tournament.

The freshman duo of Tiffany Tavares and Mimi Fotopoulos earned their first doubles victory of the season in the flight two seventh place match with a 8-6 win over the host team's duo of Michele Stanford and Amanda Murray.
