University of Tennessee student-athletes posted a record performance in the classroom for the Fall 2013 semester, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.02.
This performance represents the first time since sport-by-sport data has been recorded (2003) that the combined GPA for all student-athletes eclipsed the 3.00 threshold during the Fall semester. Including a 3.05 GPA in the Spring 2013 semester, this also marks the first time that UT student-athletes have posted a cumulative GPA above 3.00 in consecutive semesters.
"Our Tennessee student-athletes continue to set and achieve high academic standards, and their recent efforts in the classroom produced a best-ever performance during a fall semester," said Dave Hart, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics. "This continued focus on academic success plays a vital role in our pursuit of comprehensive excellence. We commend our student-athletes for their continued dedication to excellence in the classroom."
The overall Tennessee student-athlete Fall GPA has increased each of the last two years, as the 3.02 in 2013 marks an increase from the 2.97 posted in Fall 2012. A total of 11 of the 16 programs earned team GPAs above 3.00 in Fall 2013, including women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, rowing, soccer, softball, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's track and field, and volleyball.
Additionally, baseball (2.88) and rowing (3.35) recorded their best-ever Fall GPA team performances. Six programs have either increased or maintained their GPA in each of the last two fall semesters, including football's increase to a 2.64 in Fall 2013, up from a 2.49 in Fall 2012. The 2.49 was an increase over a 2.08 in Fall 2011.
A total of 33 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2013 semester, a 50 percent increase over the 22 who did so in Fall of 2012 and the second-highest total all-time, trailing only the 38 who posted 4.0 GPA's in Fall 2006.
"We are very proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Assistant Provost and Senior Associate Athletics Director Joe Scogin, who is the Director of the Thornton Center. "This is a testament to them, our coaches, academic support staff, and faculty. We have a desire to produce championship-caliber performances, both in the classroom and in the competitive arena, and these accomplishments are something the entire University can take great pride in."
Additionally, 262 Tennessee student-athletes (54%) posted a GPA of 3.00 or above, an increase over the 51 percent who did so in the Fall 2012 semester. Additionally, 120 student-athletes (25%) earned Dean's List distinction within their respective colleges, the second-highest total ever, behind only the 131 in Fall 2010.
