Timmy Bowers scored 14 first-half points to lead No. 11 Mississippi State to a 39-29 halftime lead over Tennessee at Starkville.
Bowers keyed MSU's 11-0 run early in the game as the Bulldogs erased an early 7-2 Tennessee lead in the opening minutes. Bowers was 6-of-11 from the field in the first half.
Scooter McFadgon led Tennessee with 10 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer just before halftime. Brandon Crump added eight points and C.J. Watson had seven points and four assists.
Mississippi State led by as many as 13 in the first half (39-26) with 35 second remaining.
The Vols outrebounded MSU 19-16, but committed 12 turnovers to just four for the Bulldogs.
