Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam proclaimed Thursday "Haywood Harris Day" in Knoxville, honoring the former longtime UT sports information director on his 75th birthday. A large gathering of athletics department staffers joined Haslam in a morning surprise party for the honoree.
"Haywood has meant so much to UT and this community," Haslam said. "He is a trusted friend and colleague and has been a mentor to so many in the field of sports publicity."
Among the accomplishments recognized by Haslam were Harris' more than 40 years served as SID, his being named one of the top five publicists by Inside Sports magazine, his membership in both the Knoxville Sports and CoSIDA halls of fame, and his Chancellor's Citation for Extraordinary Service to the University.
Harris also is an accomplished writer. His current release, co-authored with fellow UT legend Gus Manning, is "Six Seasons Remembered: The National Championship Years of Tennessee Football."
