Tennessee held off
a furious Vanderbilt rally and hung on for a 28-26 victory at Nashville's
Adelphia Coliseum.
The Vols jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on two touchdown
runs by Travis Henry. A John Markham field goal in the second quarter
made the halftime score 14-3.
Travis Stephens plunged in from 1 yard out for a 21-3 Tennessee lead early
in the third. Following a Vol turnover, Markham connected on his second
field goal of the day to cut the lead to 21-6.
Two quick scoring strikes by Greg Zolman to M.J. Garrett early in the
fourth closed the gap to 21-19. Following a 46-yard kick off return by
Stephens, Casey Clausen connected with Cedrick Wilson from 15 yards out
to extend the lead to 28-19 with 6:09 left. After the Commodores answered
with a 1-yard run by Jared McGrath to make it 28-26, the Vol rushing attack
picked up two key first downs to run out the clock.
