Postgame
Tennessee wins 28-10 to finish 5-7 on the season.
The Vols rushed for more than 200 yards (210 today) for the second straight game, while the defense held an opponent under 100 yards on the ground for the seventh time this season.
The Cats only managed 193 yards overall and committed eight penalties for 52 yards.
Gerald Jones was the top UT rusher with 67 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Arian Foster carried 21 times for 59 yards.
Crompton completed six of eight passes on the day. The blog is guessing he did exactly what he was asked to do.
Fulmer told the team in the locker room exactly what a Tennessee man and a mentor to young men would: Take care of yourself and work as hard as you can for the next coach.
That's it for the football game blog for this season. We'll have a game blog for all home basketball games, so look out for those.
It's been fun. We'll see ya around.
9:08 p.m. - 4th Quarter
The blog is headed to the locker room. We'll see you after the game.
9:05 p.m. - 4th Quarter
Tennessee holds the Cats at midfield and the ball is returned to the Vols. They'll start at their own 17. Anything from here is pretty much icing on the cake.
8:58 p.m. - 4th Quarter
Creer 5 run.
10 plays, 80 yards, 4:52 off the clock.
21-3 UT.
A solid, run-heavy drive from the Vols pretty much puts this one away. Lennon Creer was the feature back, carrying five times for 27 yards. The drive was helped by yet another 15-yard penalty on the Wildcats. UK has been penalized eight times for a total of 52 yards.
8:54 p.m. - End of 3rd Quarter
Tennessee is threatening again as the fourth quarter begins.
The Vols have cracked the century mark in passing yards with 101.
The total offense total is at 211 yards.
Eric Berry has carried twice on the drive for a total of 26 yards. One play for 23 yards and one play for three.
8:46 p.m. - 3rd Quarter
More Tennessee defense and more Nevin McKenzie, who makes a tackle on third and 15 to force another UK punt. The Vols will now take over at their own 20.
McKenzie's tackle total is now at seven.
8:39 p.m. - 3rd Quarter
The blog jinxed the Vols, who go three-and-out. UK takes over at their own 13 after Britton Colquitt punts for the fourth time tonight (44.4 yard average).
8:35 p.m. - 3rd Quarter
The UT defense stops the Cats on a fourth-and-two from the UT 38-yard line. That shouldn't be a suprise given the way the Vols have played without the football this season. Tennessee can score on three-straight possessions for only the third time this season with points on this possession.
Nevin McKenzie is having a good game. He has five total stops and two TFLs.
8:26 p.m. - 3rd Quarter
Moore 63 from Crompton.
3 plays, 73 yards, 1:10 off the clock.
14-3 UT.
The Vols come out of the half with a big play drawn up. It's the longest play from scrimmage of the season. Moore has only caught 11 passes this season, but he's got two for touchdowns and four of more than 40 yards.
8:20 p.m. - 3rd Quarter
The second half is underway.
8:03 p.m. - Halftime
Crompton 1 run.
12, plays, 35 yarrds, 5:36 off the clock.
7-3 Tennessee.
Tennessee finally punches it in after seven tries from within the five-yard line.
It's been a struggle, to say the least.
A quick look at the stats:
- 12 total passes between the two teams for a total of 53 yards (UT - 38, UK - 15)
- UT has 76 yards of offense to UK's 58.
- UK has been penalized seven times for 37 yards, and that is the difference in the game at this point. A pass interference penalty in the endzone gave the Vols four extra cracks at the endzone.
- Arian Foster has gained 43 yards on 13 carries and is on the way to another pretty solid day.
A quick reminder, the blog heads to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter, so be aware of that. We'll be back postgame with a few notes from the locker room, which should be pretty emotional, one way or the other.
7:44 p.m. - 2nd Quarter
Gimme a P. Gimme a U. Gimme a N. Gimme a T. What's that spell? PUNT!
Tennessee takes over at the UK 35.
We've had a grand total of 100 yards of total offense between the two teams through 50 offensive plays.
7:40 p.m. - 2nd Quarter
Copy and paste. A punt. Kentucky takes over at their own 17.
7:35 p.m. - 2nd Quarter
Whatta ya know? Another punt. Tennessee takes over at the UK 49.
7:30 p.m. - 2nd Quarter
Tennessee punts after an offensive pass interference penalty on Austin Rogers puts them in third-and-forever.
It would appear that Gerald Jones is healthy again, as he is getting a good number of touches early. Three on offense and a punt return for a total of 58 yards.
7:26 p.m. - 2nd Quarter
The blog apologizes for the technical difficulties. Tennessee has the ball at their own 29 after a UK punt opened the second frame.
Our first G-Gun sighting of the day gaines six yards.
7:22 p.m. - End 1st Quarter
After one period:
Rushing yards: 65 for the Cats, 29 for the Vols
Passing Yards: 15 for the Cats, 8 for the Vols
Cats have been penalized three time for 25 yards
7:17 p.m. - 1st Quarter
Daniel Lincoln misses a 31-yard field goal after the Vols drove 39 yards in seven plays, using the Arian Foster most of the drive.
Foster carried five times for 31 yards. It looks like the Vols have just changed the heading at the top of the Vanderbilt game plan. Run, run, run.
7:10 p.m. - 1st Quarter
Gerald Jones gives the Vols great field position with a 39-yard kick return. After one play, UT is in Kentucky territory.
7:08 p.m. - 1st Quarter
Sieber 40 field goal.
7 plays, 22 yards, 3:05 off the clock.
3-0 UK
7:02 p.m. - 1st Quarter
Tennessee can't do anything with the ball backed up and punts to Kentucky. The Cats take possession at the UT 44.
Tennessee's third-down play looked out of whack. Crompton took the snap and rolled right, but there was no one rolling with him. He ended up taking a sack.
6:56 p.m. ET - 1st Quarter
The Cats drive almost into the redzone, but then land on the double whammy and have two penalties in one play move them back out of field goal range. A punt ensues and the Vols take over at their own five.
The UK offense looked good to start the drive, but 20 yards of penalties on one play will kill just about any kind of momentum.
6:47 p.m. ET - 1st Quarter
The Phillip Fulmer pregame fesitivities were pretty low key. Just a jog through the T with the family, just as he probably wanted it.
The blog is hanging out with Clay Travis, and as a result missed the coin toss. Kentucky has the ball to open the game.
6:30 p.m. ET - Pregame
We’ve got 15 minutes left until kick and we’re about ready for a few final runs through the T. Twenty-four Tennessee seniors and Phillip Fulmer will make a final jog through the band-former T in just a few minutes.
Below is a list of the seniors being honored today:
Robert Ayers, Brett Barnes, Demonte Bolden, Josh Briscoe, Jake Brown, Britton Colquitt, Stephen Darville, Walter Fisher, Arian Foster, Ramon Foster, Brent Freeman, Derrick Furlow, Antonio Gaines, Ryan Hill, Nevin McKenzie, Adam Myers-White, Anthony Parker, Lucas Taylor, Brett Thomason, Phillip Tritapoe, Ben Weisensel, Ja'Kouri Williams, DeAngelo Willingham and Ellix Wilson.
Here are a few other series notes before we get started:
Tennessee leads the all-time series with the Wildcats 71-23-9, including a 37-10-6 mark in Knoxville.
The Vols are putting their 23-game winning streak on the line as Kentucky has not defeated Tennessee since taking a 17-12 decision in 1984.
The Vols pulled out a 52-50 win in a four-overtime classic last season in Lexington.
Only one Vol on the two-deep depth chart calls the state of Kentucky home. Sophomore tight end Luke Stocker is a native of Berea, Kentucky.
6:15 p.m. ET - Pregame
The blog is back with our last keys to the game of the season. As per tradition, it’s three questions the Vols have to answer in order to get the W.
- Can the Vols handle the emotions? It’s Phillip Fulmer’s last game as Tennessee’s head coach, and his players and coaches have all had an emotional last four weeks. It all comes to a close today, and how well the Vols handle the fan fare will go along way to determining who wins the game.
- Can the Vols stop Randall Cobb? East Tennessee native Randall Cobb has had a big season for the Cats since moving to quarterback. He is a playmaker, and if he has his way with the UT defense, we all know the UT offense likely can’t keep up.
- Can the Vols run the football like they did last week at Vanderbilt? Tennessee put 200+ rushing yards on the board in Nashville and a similar effort would keep the ball out of Randall Cobb’s hands and hopefully put some points on the board.
6:00 p.m. ET - Pregame
The blog is back with you as the scoreboard clock says we have 45 minutes until kickoff. Weather.com has provided us with our game forecasts throughout the season, and today they’re telling us to expect overcast skies and temperatures around 48 degrees. Wind and rain shouldn’t be a problem early, but temperatures will drop to around 40 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain as the game reaches its final stages.
5:45 p.m. ET - Pregame
Good afternoon/evening and welcome to the final game blog of the 2008 football season. We’re coming to you from the Tom Elam Press Box atop the west side of Neyland Stadium while we’re getting ready for the UT-Kentucky game and Phillip Fulmer Appreciation Day.
Tennessee enters the game 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the SEC. The Cats are 6-5 and 2-5 in the SEC.
We’ll be back with you through the hour leading up to the game with a weather update, keys to the game and a few other notes. Check back often and send us an email at the link above if you want – maybe some Phillip Fulmer memories if you feel so inclined.
