UT Wraps up Day 2 at Diving Invite

Jan. 4, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Four UT divers reached the finals and freshman Samantha Lera put together a career performance Friday on the second afternoon of the Tennessee Diving Invitational at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

In the women's 1-meter springboard competition, three Lady Vols finished in the top five with senior Jodie McGroarty again leading the way for the team with a second-place finish and a score of 295.30.

Lera took third in a career-best six-dive score of 293.25, and junior Tori Lamp came in fifth in 293.25. Missouri's Loren Figueroa won the competition with a score of 301.25.

"I was proud of the way all three young ladies competed all day long," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington. "Jodie's had a fantastic couple of days diving, winning yesterday and close to pulling it out again today."

Lera, from Kema, Texas, also made the finals on the 3-meter springboard Thursday and finished 12th. Parrington said that experience helped her control her nerves and perform much better in the 1-meter finals.

"Yesterday, she had a little more adrenaline," Parrington said. "She might have had the same today, but she kept her emotions in check and wasn't trying to overdo things."

On the men's side, senior Brent Sterling was the only Vol on the boards, and again, he proved to be one of the top competitors in the field.

He threw down the top qualifying score of 394.45 in the preliminaries, the second-best total of his career. In the finals, he missed on his middle dives but came away with a fourth-place total of 370.00.

"Brent, he's a fifth-year senior, but he's just now really coming into his own," Parrington said. "He had an excellent prelim list. Some of the dives he did were the best he's ever done them. I'm really happy with the way he's competing and his composure. He's starting to hit those big dives."

Kentucky's Greg Ferucci won the competition in 410.85.

The Tennessee Diving Invitational concludes Saturday with the men's and women's 10-meter platform competition beginning at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.
