On the boards, the Lady Vols swept both events while senior Brent Sterling took a pair of silvers on the men's side.

Both the men's and women's competition featured national-level talent on both sides. Junior Tori Lamp won the 3-meter springboard with a score of 335.85, followed by senior teammate Jodie McGroarty in second (318.60). McGroarty later won the 1-meter event with a score of 303.68, and Lamp was third in 278.25.

"There's no question she's had her best year of competition," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She comes to practice with a mission to make that practice better than the last one every single day. When you have a consistent level of practice for a long period of time, her results are going to show. she's sharpened up and been very very consistent."

Freshman Samantha Lera was fourth on the 1 meter and sixth on the 3 meter.

A week after Sterling was the Vols' only competitor at the Tennessee Diving Invitational, Saturday's meet welcomed the return of senior Jordan Mauney back from injury. Sterling got second on the 3-meter springboard (336.67) and the 1-meter (367.27). Mauney was seventh on the 3 meter and fourth on the 1 meter.

"Overall, I was pleased with our standard of diving against a high-quality diving team, both for the men and the women," Parrington said. "The team had top-eight NCAA divers. Tori and Jodie had great meets. Going into a hostile environment as Brent did at Virginia Tech, I was pleased with his performance."

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Tennessee swimming and diving team split Saturday's dual meet on the road against Virginia Tech in both squads' first swimming competition since November.

The 10th-ranked Lady Vols finished first in 15 of 16 events en route to a 186-108 victory over the Hokies. Sophomore Tristan Slater picked up a pair of victories once again but 17th-ranked Virginia Tech won 10 events in the Vols' close 166.5-133.5 loss at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Junior Lindsay Gendron paced the Lady Vols by breaking the pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle and winning the 500 freestyle. She also had the fastest time in the 200 individual medley in exhibition.

"I felt like our women competed and executed really well," Tennessee head coach Matt Kredich said. "It was a very consistent effort all the way through the team. They were very professional in their races. felt like we're making progress. Lindsay had another great day winning the 1000 and 500 freestyles."

The Lady Vols improved to 6-0 in dual meets this season. The Vols dropped to 3-3.

With the championship season just a month away, Kredich said the men's team fell short of expectations Saturday. Despite a few bright spots, the squad needs to learn from the overall performance.

"For the men, it didn't feel like our team was focused on winning the meet, and we need to find out why that was because there's not a lot of time left," Kredich said. "A few swimmers were consistent. Freshman Sean Lehane was consistent in his races, as he's been all year. Ed Walsh had a good performance in the 100 breaststroke. Another freshman, Gustav Aberg Ledjstrom, has been battling injuries all year but won a good race in the 200 freestyle."

Tennessee returns to action Jan. 26 with a dual meet at home against SEC foe Georgia. It will be the final combined men's and women's dual meet this season at Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

For more on Saturday's races:

INSIDE WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Gendron got the individual races off to a blazing start. She broke the pool record in the 1000 freestyle in 9 minutes, 44.35 seconds. While the 1000 freestyle is not an SEC or NCAA meet race, the time is her fastest this season by more than three seconds, certainly a good sign for one of the nation's time milers.

She also clocked a season-best time of 4:45.69 in her victory in the 500 freestyle.

Senior Kelsey Floyd did not swim her customary butterfly races Saturday, but she did post her best time this season in the 200 freestyle, winning in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:47.68. She was also second in the 1000 freestyle (10:01.43) and 500 freestyle

Sophomore Molly Hannis stuck to her usual events and again won them both. Hannis remained unbeaten in breaststroke events this year winning the 100 (1:02.21) and 200 (2:15.47).

Tennessee excelled in both backstroke events. Junior Lauren Solernou won the 100 backstroke (55.01) and then Kate McNeilis took first in the 200 backstroke (2:00.95) as part of a 1-2-3-4 Lady Vol finish.

The Lady Vols also went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 butterfly, which was won by freshman Mary Griffith (2:03.04).

In the sprint freestyles, senior Caroline Simmons in the 50 race, touching the wall in 23.18. Freshman Faith Johnson, who was second in the 50 freestyle, later won the 100 freestyle in 50.44.

"One of the most impressive things for me is that our freshmen keep getting better for the most part," Kredich said. "They're making steady progress as we prepare for the SEC meet. They're such a big part of our team, so that's really important."

After the second diving break, Tennessee swam the final two races as exhibition, so the times counted for NCAA consideration but were not scored in the team event. Gendron had the fastest time in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.19. The 400 freestyle relay team of Floyd, Simmons, freshman Harper Bruens, Gendron touched the wall first in 3:22.53.

INSIDE MEN'S SWIMMING
Slater was dependable in his races once again. He won the 200 breaststroke for the fourth time this season (2:03.10), finished third in the 200 butterfly (1:50.66) and then wrapped up the meet with his second win this year in the 200 individual medley (1:50.13).

Freshman Gustav Aberg Ledjstrom won his first career collegiate race, just beating out Virginia Tech's Owen Burns at the wall in 1:40.71. It was the Vols' first individual win of the day.

Freshman Sean Lehane, who had a breakout performance during the three-day Tennessee Invitational to end the fall season, picked up where he left off. He won the 200 backstroke in 1:46.15, his second-best time. He was also second in the 100 backstroke (49.13).

Another freshman, Ben Miller, paced the Vols in the two distance races, taking second in the 1000 freestyle (career-best 9:27.43) and the 500 freestyle (4:34.78).

Senior Ed Walsh won the 100 breaststroke in 55.76, followed closely by junior Renator Prono. Walsh also came in third in the 50 freestyle (20.87).
