McGroarty Punches Ticket for NCAAs

March 11, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee senior Jodie McGroarty assured herself of a final trip to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with her performance on the 3-meter springboard Monday.

McGroarty opened the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on her home boards at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center by taking third on the 3-meter springboard to automatically qualify for the NCAA championship field later this month.

"Kudos to Jodie today for qualifying again for NCAAs," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She will be able to relax now and help get her teammates qualified as well."

A total of six divers qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Monday after the first day of competition. The zone is made up of regional schools, several of them from the Southeastern Conference.

Junior Tori Lamp also put herself in the hunt for one of the 10 qualifying spots available on the women's side, rallying in the finals to finish eighth on the three-meter. Senior Brent Sterling also put together a solid first-day showing, taking four on the 1 meter in the men's competition.

The Tennessee divers will have a chance to improve their standing for the NCAA field when the meet resumes Tuesday. The men and women flip competitions, with the women competing on the 1-meter springboard starting at 11 a.m. and the men on the 3-meter springboard at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free for all sessions.

In the women's 3-meter competition, four divers assured themselves of a spot in the national field: Laura Ryan of Georgia, Rachel Mumma of NC State, McGroarty and Carrie Dragland of Miami. Ryan won the competition with a score of 702.50.

McGroarty, who took silver on the 3-meter boards at the SEC Championships a few weeks ago, put together a solid performance all day and finished with a 12-dive score of 665.80. It was good for second place and just five points behind NC State's Rachel Mumma (670.70).

Lamp struggled midway through the preliminary round with a missed dive for less than 30 points but qualified for the evening finals with a strong finish. She steadily climbed the ladder in the finals, eventually finishing eighth in 637.05.

In her first zone competition, Lera made the finals in the first event. She finished 17th (548.65).

There are 10 spots up for grabs in the women's field between the three diving events.

In the opening men's 1-meter competition, Olympian Nick McCrory of Duke assured his spot in the NCAA field early. He paced the field by a wide margin, winning with a 12-dive combined score of 820.80.

Thomas Neubacher of Florida State also assured himself a spot in Indianapolis by scoring 728.45 to finish second.

For Tennessee, Sterling led the way for the Vols on the afternoon 1-meter springboard competition, finishing fourth with a 12-dive score of 671.65. He missed on his final two dives to slide from third to fourth, which moved him down the qualifying priority list.

Fellow senior Jordan Mauney reached the finals as well, placing 14th (575.55 points).

Only five men's divers from Zone B qualify for the NCAA Championships. Right now, Sterling is 10th on the priority list, but has a chance to improve his standing on Tuesday's 3 meter, which has been his best event this year.
