Day 2 Wraps up at NCAA Zone Diving

March 11, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Tennessee's three divers competed Tuesday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Redshirt sophomore Mauricio Robles, who qualified for the NCAA final site Monday, continued his strong diving on the second day of the zone meet. He posted a 12-dive preliminary and final combined score of 742.75 to finish fourth in the 1-meter competition.

"Our attitude was he was going to get out there and dive, going against some really good divers he'll see at NCAAs," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "It was a good opportunity for him to do that. We're going to do the same thing tomorrow."

Heading into Wednesday's platform competition to finish the meet, redshirt senior Tori Lamp and sophomore Samantha Lera have not yet secured positions in next week's NCAA field.

On Tuesday, Lamp finished 10th on the 3-meter springboard in 629.50, and Lera was 20th (275.20).

"In the women's three meter, Tori unfortunately missed her second dive," Parrington said. "It's been a little inconsistent for her all year. It put her in a big hole, but she climbed back and got within striking distance. It was disappointing there, but I liked her fight to get back in the contest.

"As for Sam, she also had a really solid competition except for one dive. We'll come back tomorrow."

Lamp is currently two spots away from qualifying on the priority list, thanks to her fifth-place finish on the 1-meter springboard Monday. A top-two finish on Wednesday's platform for Lamp or Lera would get them into the NCAA meet. A third-place performance might be good enough to qualify, depending on the performance of other divers.
