Lauryn McCalley finished sixth in the one-meter springboard, one spot out of qualifying.
March 12, 2004
Diving Coach Dave Parrington came up just one slot shy of qualifying a diver in the one-meter springboard competition of the NCAA Zone B Diving Regional at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., as junior Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) claimed sixth place in the 1m finals with a 547.50 string of dives.
In preliminary competition, McCalley finished in fifth place with a 267.50, while senior Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) took 21st place with a 240.50 tally. A diver who qualifies for NCAAs in any one diving event will then be able to compete in all events in which she participated at the zone championships. The three-meter springboard will be held on Saturday and to qualify for NCAAs, a diver must be among the top five athletes who did not qualify on the 1m. The final day of the zone championships consists of the platform competition, in which divers must place in the top three of those who did not qualify in the 1m or 3m to earn a spot at NCAAs. Next up, the Lady Vols enter the three-meter springboard fray Saturday at 3:30 p.m., in the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
