Lamp Grabs Final Qualifying Spot at Zones

March 12, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Tennessee redshirt senior Tori Lamp earned the ninth and final qualifying spot to the national meet after competition Wednesday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships.

Lamp qualified for next week's NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships via her fifth-place finish on the 1-meter springboard on Monday. She missed several dives during Wednesday's platform competition to finish fifth with a 10-dive score of 550.70.

However, Lamp got some help in qualifying on the last day of the meet. She was able to take the ninth qualifying spot in the field because two top divers this week turned in another day of strong performances on platform. Katrina Young of Florida State and Laura Ryan of Georgia took first and second on platform to ensure Lamp moved up the priority list. (NCAA qualifying priority list is included at the end of release.)

"It was a real battle today," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She was struggling some. She's been dealing with shoulder issues most of the season, so her training has been sporadic. We didn't really want it to come to this, but she got it done. She's going to the meet. She's got two more competitive lists on platform under her belt that will help her at NCAAs."

Lamp has finished second the last two years at the NCAA Championships. In 2013, she reached the top-eight in all three diving events. She joins 10 UT swimmers who qualified for individual events. Including relay swimmers, Tennessee will send 14 competitors to the women's meet, which will be held March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Sophomore Samantha Lera finished 11th on platform with a score of 468.40.

"Samantha did a commendable job," Parrington said. "She made a few a few technical errors in the prelims, but she did a good job to correct them in the finals. We're really happy with her performance."

Redshirt sophomore Mauricio Robles finished third in the men's platform with a 12-dive preliminary-final combined score of 751.80. Wednesday was another relatively stress-free day for Robles. The Vols' sophomore qualified for the NCAA Championships on Monday thanks to a second-place finish on the 3-meter springboard.

When a diver qualifies for the NCAA Championships in one event, he or she is eligible to dive in all three diving events as long as he or she participates in the event at the zone meet.

"Mauricio just went in and got some competitive training in again today," Parrington said. "Now we'll move on and get ready for NCAAs."
