Lauryn McCalley earned a trip to the NCAA Championships today.
March 13, 2004
Diving Coach Dave Parrington punched one ticket to the NCAA Championships in the three-meter springboard competition of the NCAA Zone B Diving Regional at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., as junior Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) captured the event title with a 530.05 run of dives that not only added a championship trophy to her collection but also earned her a berth at NCAAs. In preliminary competition, senior Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) finished in 38th place with a 213.70 string of dives. Wells has one more shot at garnering a bid to the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, with the platform competition on Sunday.
"The field was pretty darn tough," Parrington said. "Lauryn dove with a tough-minded sense of purpose today. She scrapped and fought all day. Kylee will go at it tomorrow with the same sense of purpose."
A diver who qualifies for NCAAs in any one diving event will then be able to compete in all events in which she participated at the zone championships. The final day of the zone championships consists of the platform competition, in which divers must place in the top two of those who did not qualify in the 1m or 3m to earn a spot at NCAAs.
