INDIANAPOLIS -- Tennessee placed 20th in the 800-yard freestyle relay Wednesday to start the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium.

The Tennessee team of Meghan Small, Colleen Callahan, Erika Brown and Micah Bohon swam a season-best 7 minutes, 4.73 seconds to finish four spots out of scoring team points.

It was the first NCAA race for freshmen Small and Brown.

Stanford won the event, breaking the American record by more than three seconds in a time of 6:45.91.

Thursday's competition begins at 10 a.m. with the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 1-meter diving.
