COLLEGE STATION, Texas

University of Tennessee Head Coach Dan Colella and Diving Coach Dave Parrington's swimming and diving squad captured five points during the initial day of competition at the NCAA Championships in the Student Recreation Center Natatorium of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Junior Lauryn McCalley closed out the day on a high note by claiming her fourth All-America certificate in the one-meter springboard competition with a 12th-place string of dives.

Freshman Megan Tomes (Cincinnati, Ohio) opened up the NCAA Championship in the 200m IM by finishing outside of the guaranteed point-winners with a 20th-place 2:14.19 time, while Auburn's Kirsty Coventry snapped both the NCAA record and US Open record to advance as the top finalist with a 2:09.34. Senior Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa) followed Tomes with a 26.14 clocking in the 50m freestyle to finish in 63rd place, while Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce eclipsed the NCAA, American and US Open standards in the event as the top finalist with a 24.21.

In the 400m medley relay, the quartet of Tomes, sophomore Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio), freshman Tiffany Clay (Lima, Ohio) and Ternent ended up in 19th place with a 4:11.04 to close out the first day of competition for the swimmers as no one advanced to the finals.

In Tennessee's final performance of the preliminary round and day, McCalley claimed her fourth All-America certificate with a 267.60 run of dives and also added five points to UT's coffer. McCalley's synchronized diving partner, Lane Bassham of Alabama, was the top finalist from the 1m prelims with a 308.40 performance.

All five student-athletes will be in action tomorrow in the second day of competition at the NCAAs with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
