COLLEGE STATION, Texas

Junior Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) took sixth place in the three-meter springboard competition with a 524.55 string of dives at the NCAA Championship in the Student Recreation Center Natatorium of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Tennessee ended the second day of competition in 25th place with 19 points.

"I am very pleased with how Lauryn dove this evening," Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "She stepped up and hit every one of her dives. She just had too much ground to make up. She made some corrections from today and competed very well."

With the sixth-place effort, McCalley matched her highest NCAA finish in the three-meter event and clinched 13 points for Tennessee.

"I am really happy with how I dove tonight," McCalley said. "I just wish I had a better set of required dives coming into tonight. I just thank God that I got through the meet tonight."

McCalley's synchronized diving partner, Lane Bassham of Alabama, claimed the national championship with a 557.75 final tally.

"I couldn't be happier for her," McCalley said. "I felt like I won with her tonight. I am very proud of Lane."

Parrington also had some thoughts on Bassham's triumph. "Lane is an outstanding diver," Parrington said. "Lauryn and Lane have been diving together for a number of years and even though they are both from rival programs, they pull for each other to do well.

In the Big Orange's swimming portion of the evening session, sophomore Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) claimed one point for UT with a 16th-place 1:01.27 clocking, while California's Natalie Coughlin finished with an NCAA Championship meet record time of 57.51 in the event to capture the crown.

Next up, the Lady Vols close out the season in the final day of competition at the NCAA Championship with preliminaries at 11 a.m. CT.
